Advantages: a great way to spend quality time with your family

Disadvantages: can be confusing to start with

I play quite a lot of board games as i work in an after school club and the children love to sit down with a game. One of my favourites is Payday. This game is for 2-6 players and is recommended for ages 8 and up.

First you need to decide how many months you want to play, that is how many times you want to go round the board and move along the calendar from start to finish.

The object of the game is to be the person with the most money when you have finished playing through however many months you decide to play.
It is recommended that you if you play a game with 4 players that you play at least 2 months. If you play for 3 months it should take about an hour and a 6 month game roughly about 2 hours.

To set up the game
The game board just gets laid out on the table. There are post cards and deal cards, these need to be placed in piles face down. One of the deal cards needs to be placed under the car boot sale space at the edge of the board. One person needs to be the banker and another person will have to be in charge of looking after any loans, they will have a pad of paper to keep track of everything. You then pick a player to go first and you are ready to start playing the game. Each player takes it in turn to move along the board and then depending on what square they land on depends on what they need to do next.

Post
If you land on a space with a post box this means that you have to take a post card, but there will be a number on the post box. This will correspond to how many cards you need to pick up for example, 1 card if there is a one, 2 cards if there is a two and 3 cards if there is a three. Some require you to sort them out immediately while others you hold on to until pay day at the end of the month. There a five different sort of cards that you can pick up-
Pay a neighbour- this one you have to pay straight away depending on how much it says on the card.
Mad money- this one you get to collect money from a neighbour straight away, if they dont have the money they will have to take out a loan.
Charity- this one is to be paid straight away and goes into the jackpot. The jackpot can be won whenever a player rolls a six on the dice.
Monster charge- these are your big bills and can be paid off at payday. If you dont want to pay it all off you just pay the interest which is shown on the card, the bill gets carried over to the next month.
Deal/Found a buyer- this card allows you to move to either of the spaces, it is your choice.

When you land on a deal space you pick the top card off the pile and you decide whether you want to purchase it or not. You can take a loan out if necessary. You are allowed as many deals as you want at one time. When you land on a found a buyer space you can sell one of your deal cards back to the bank at a time. They are worth more when you sell them back, the price will be on the deal card. These can not be used again in the game and any that you have left over at the end of the game will be worth nothing.

The other board spaces are-
The pools- if you land on this you collect £5000 from the bank.

The lottery- every player can take part in this if they wish but it is not necessary. Each player gives £100 andthe bank gives £1000, then every body picks a number between 1 and 6 to correspond with the dice. When the dice is rolled, whoever had that number wins the money if there are less than 6 players, you just keep rolling until someones number comes up.

Buy a pet, super ski sunday, charity concert, food for the month and shopping spree- this money goes into the jackpot.

Radio phone in contest- each player takes it in turns to roll the dice, the 1st to roll a three wins £1000 from the bank.

Happy birthday- each of the other players must give you £100.

Car boot sale- whatever number you rolled on the dice times it by 100 and pay the bank and the deal card that you put there at the beginning of the game is yours.

Walk for charity- Every player except the person who rolled the dice, must roll the dice and pay 100 times the roll to the jackpot.

Payday- You must stop here and collect your salary of £3500, if you have a loan you must pay interest and can pay off some or all of it. You must also pay your bills and any deal cards you have are no longer worth anything.

If a player finishes the game before the others they can still join in with the lottery, Happy birthday, Walk for charity or the radio phone in contest while they are waiting for the others to finish.

The winner is the player with the most amount of money.

This game sounds very confusing but when you have played it a couple of times you soon get to understand the game and the rules. It is a lot of fun but is definately not suitable for younger children.

Summary: a great game that i would recommend to anyone
