Peppa Pig Snakes and Ladders
Advantages: Helps with counting, turn-taking and game play
Disadvantages: Slippy on carpet
My daughter really likes Peppa Pig and also enjoys playing games with us. She likes to have games that can be played as a family and we need simple ones for her as she is still quite young. We were lucky that she was given this Peppa Pig Snakes and Ladders game for Christmas last year. She was 2 and a half when she received this.
---About Peppa Pig:
Peppa Pig is a character from the TV shows of the same name. The show follows her life with her little brother George, her Mummy and Daddy, and all of her friends. The character is suitable for young children up to age 5-6 years and my daughter who is 2 1/2 loves it. Peppa gets up to all kinds of mischief like my daughter, but she generally learns something by the end of the episode.
---About the product:
The Peppa Pig snakes and ladders game comes in a cardboard box with a picture of the game on the side of it and images from the cartoon of Peppa and George. The design of the box is very similar to other Peppa Pig products so it is recognisable as being from the same range. The box also has an age range of 3+ written onto it.
Once you open the box, there are 4 round disks of different colours that have a picture of a member of Peppa's family on them. One with Peppa, one with George, one with Mummy Pig and one with Daddy Pig. There is also a large foam die and the plastic mat which is the game board. The plastic mat is 80 x 80cm so is only suitable for a large playing space. Once we unfolded the mat, you can see that the board has 49 squares which are labelled with the numbers including the square that says 'finish'. Each square has a picture of one of Peppa's family or it says 'oink'. There are also 5 snakes and 5 ladders on the board. All the squares are brightly coloured and the characters are very recognisable from the show.
As soon as my daughter saw the box she was excited as she loves Peppa Pig so we had to get it out for her. It was quite hard to teach her the concept of taking turns, but she grasped the idea of going up ladders and down snakes very easily. The counters were easy for her to hold and having the Peppa pictures on them made it more fun for her to join in. The die is nice and light so it is easy for her to pick up - unfortunately is also easy for her to throws which she likes to do over-arm and quite hard so we do spend a bit of time chasing after the die!
The game is helping her with counting as we try to count the numbers on the die as well as counting how many squares we are moving. It also helps teaching her about taking turns and about winning and losing as we always play it properly and she really doesn't care who wins which is great. You do need to be careful if the mat gets left out at all as it is very slippery on a carpet and you need to make sure you don't stand on it.
The game costs £9.99 regularly but I have seen it for much less. I think the game is worth paying money for as it appeals to young children to like Peppa Pig and encourages them to join in playing games. Although the age range states 3+, I think it is suiatble for slightly younger as well as they can start to appreciate the subtleties of game play. It is good for helping them with counting and is a fun way to include family times together.
Summary: Fun family time with a traditional game
