Tomy Pop Up Pirate
Advantages: It is a fun game for everyone, it is very easy to play and foes not need batteries
On the whole I am not a fan of modern childrens games because they are too fussy and complicated to set up as well as needing a lot of batteries to keep most of them going.
Pop Up Pirate is easy to set up, fun to play and best of all does not need any batteries so it is a firm favourite when my grandaughter comes to visit. The game looks like a big barrel with a cartoon style pirate sticking out of the top. The barrel actually comes in 2 halves which have to be put together when you are ready to play the game, the top half of the barrel holds the ejection mechanism which will eventually make the pirate pop up. The 2 halves are very easy to fit together and it is a case of simply lining them up and slotting them into place. The first time you use the game you will need to decorate it with the nice bright stickers that are inside the box.
The aim of the game is to choose one of the sets of sweet plastic swords and then you slide these into a series of slots that are cut into the barrel. By the time you are ready to do this you will already have pushed your pirate into the top of the barrel so just the very top of his head is visible. Then each player takes it in turn to push a sword into their choice of slot, hoping that the slot they have chosen is not the one that will cause the mechanism to send the pirate flying up into the air.
You can play it both ways where the person who makes the pirate pop up is either the winner or the loser. We usually play so that the one who makes him pop up loses the game and then if more than 2 of us are playing the others play another game and so on until eventually there is one person left who is the winner.
The Pop Up Pirate game is very sturdy because the barrel fits onto a wide base and this makes the game very stable when we are playing and it also means I can leave the game set up on my shelf without the worry of it falling over. There are no sharp edges for little fingers to cut themselves on and even the sword slots are not wide enough for children to put their fingers in. I think this is a very safe game because there is nothing that can hurt children and as far as I can see there are no small pieces that can be swallowed although you might want to watch younger children that they do not put the swords in their mouth.
It is fun to play and I remember when my grandaughters were smaller they would squeal in delight when the pirate flew up. Over time the pirate has lost some of his energy and does not pop up quite as high as he used to but he still makes me jump! I think it is a lovely game and I enjoy the surprise of not knowing who is going to choose the random slot that is going to make the pirate pop up. It is a little bit noisy when he pops up but who wants a silent game really and we always go quiet when a sword is slid in so the noise when the pirate pops up can seem even louder. My grandaughters laugh and laugh when I make him pop up because I always go into the game thinking that I am going to win and I act a little bit disappointed when the pirate flies up.
Tomy who make Pop Up Pirate say that this should not be played by under 4 year olds but I cannot really see why as my friends grandson is only 2 and he loves the game when they come to visit me. His nan is always watching him to make sure he cannot hurt himself but there has never been an accident involving this game. You can buy it cheap now and I paid £5 for mine from Sainsburys.
Summary: A fun game for all ages but it can make you jump
