Advantages: Simple to learn, great fun.
Disadvantages: Squabbling over who's right & who's wrong!
I was introduced to this game by my husband. I don't usually enjoy trying new board games - they take too long to figure out, you can never remember the rules & the instruction books gone missing, are all the pieces there....etc etc...
But there's none of that with Scattergories. It's such a simple format, but don't let that put you off - it's great fun!
Each player has an answering pad with 3 category cards. Each card has 4 lists, each with 12 'questions'. The 20 sided dice (with 20 letters) is rolled & the timer started. The aim of the game is to go down the current round's list & answer each of the 12 questions....& here's the simple genius to the game - each answer MUST begin with the letter on the dice. Sounds simple, right? Well, you'd be amazed how hard it is to think of things/people beginning with the letter in question, especially with the loud timer buzzing away in the background!
Questions can be anything from 'Fruit', 'Vegetable', 'Things at a Football Match', 'Famous Singer' etc. So for example, if the letter rolled is 'B', you could have Banana, Brocolli, Ball, Beyonce....
At the end of each round (feel free to argue amongst yourselves whether or not answers are acceptable!), tot up your scores & move onto the next list & re-roll the dice. Should 2 or more people put the same answer, then they score zero for that question. Hence players should try to think of the most unique answer possible! Extra points can be scored when using alliteration, for example 'A Famous Racehorse' beginning with R, with the answer 'Red Rum' would score 2 points.
Once play has proceeded through all 12 cards (or as many as you feel like completing), scores are added up to decide the winner.
Scattergories is recommended for players age 12 & up, & is for 2-6 players. Set up time is minimal & each round takes approx 2 mins (but debating time when scoring afterwards can take quite a while - I recommend a democratic vote is taken to decide if answers are acceptable or not!).
Give it a go. Even if you don't usually like board games, you'll probably find you enjoy this one.
Summary: Wholesome fun for the whole family!
