Advantages: Fun and challenging too
We've played Scattergories for many years now a Christmas or family get togethers. We have piles and piles of various boardgames and this is yet another classic that can be played and have fun. Again, also, it is a word game like so many others as well. I always love the games like this though that challenge your mind and make you realise how quickly you can think and how intelligent or unintelligent you really are! The game can be picked up for around £19.99 nowadays if you shop around and that's not bad value when I consider the hours of fun I have enjoyed with it.
I've always found and it's my opinion that this game like so many others is better when there are more players playing and we have often played with about 6 players so you have a lot of competition and laughs.
At the start of the game each person is given a folder with a pad in it for writing answers down. You are then given some cards with different category names written down. Once all players decide on a category to be played then the game really gets going. Now it's time to start trying to earn enough points to win.
A player will roll the dice and whichever letter is shown will be the one that you play with in that round. The timer is then turned voer and the game starts. The time allowed is only 3 minutes which really taxes you, believe me.
The idea and aim of the game are very simple and you have to list one thing for each category in the time allowed and write that in the pad you are provided. The only thing is that the word must start with the letter assigned for that round.
It's actuall pretty tough as you have the added pressure of not just the ticking timer as it counts down, but also that you can see other players scribbling away frantically and your mind goes blank! Of course, some rounds are easier than others due to the letter chosen and the category, but that's part of the appeal as you just don't know what you are going to get.
At the end of each round players read their answers to the group. If two or more players have the same answer then nobody gets a point. However, if you have come up with a word that nobody else has thought of then you get one point. So you can see, you can up with easy words all day long but if others have also got them you don't get anything for those words!
This for me is a fantastic way to spend a fun few hours with family or friends and at the same time do something educational that will really test your brain.
Summary: Highly recommended classic board game
