Advantages: Educational game, suitable for all the family, extends vocabulary

As a family we really like Scrabble as it actually brings everyone together for a sensible game. It also makes you think. With two children, it extends their vocabulary too. Even with them being 9 and 12, they give us a decent challenge on some games.

For those who don't know, Scrabble is a word game. You have a board, that is divided into squares. You have square tiles, with letters on, each one worth a different number of points. For example 'A' is worth one point, whereas 'Z' or 'Q' is worth ten. You place words on the board, in a crossword style, building off other peoples words. If you manage to place your tiles across special coloured squares you get bonus points, like double your word score.

Where Scrabble Deluxe differs is the quality. Instead of plastic tiles, you get wooden ones. The board is wood, with a raised grid to make the letter tiles stay in place (instead of a cardboard playing surface). Plus the whole board is on a turntable. This is particularly useful, as it allows you to rotate the board so the words are facing the right way for you. You also get nicer tile holders and a bag for the tiles too. It costs about £30 to £35, instead of about £15 for the regular version. In my opinion it is worth paying the extra for. It feels a lot nicer to play and that turntable feature is a lot more useful than one would think.
