Advantages: An interesting game of pit your wits
Disadvantages: none
I have just looked for the history of Scrabble on Wikipedia and I was really surprised to find that it was created as far back as 1938, by an American architect called Alfred Mosher Butts.
Scrabble is a game for 2-4 players aged 8+
The skills needed are listed as counting, strategy, anagramming, vocabulary and spelling.
I have always loved Scrabble since I was a child, though Scrabble is a very competitive game, surprisingly I am not in the least competitive, I just love to play for fun.
There is an online Scrabble website that is excellent, it has interactive play and I have played on the site for five years now.
The site address is www.isc.co.uk. you have to download an interface before you can register, but then the 24/7 site is open for your use.
The site can be used by people from all over the world as the Scrabble can be played in many different languages.
Two popular word lists are used on this site, TWL and SOWPODS, I always play the SOWPODS word list. Word list really being another name for a dictionary.
The board game version is very enjoyable, usually there are just two of us pitting our wits!
I am sure that most of you are familiar with the chequered Scrabble board.
The game starts with each player choosing 7 tiles, then as they form each of their words they replenish the tiles, until all of the game tiles are used.
Certain squares that you might land on will earn you extra points and if you are lucky enough to be able to use all 7 letters in one go then it is called a `Bingo` this earns you an extra 50 points on top of your normal score.
We always have a dictionary to hand, in fact we have two!, many times one of us will challenge a word that the other has put down!
If we have time we will have the best of 3 games so that we have an overall winner.
I read that Scrabble was a later form of `Lexico`, maybe this is the game I used to play as a child called Lexicon?
You can buy Scrabble in different game board formats including: Travel Scrabble, Deluxe Editions and a Large Print Edition (in association with the RNIB)
Scrabble has gained Worldwide popularity, there are many prestigious tournaments played including: The World Scrabble Championship, The National Scrabble Championship, The Thailand International, The World Youth Scrabble Championships, The National School Scrabble Championship and The Canadian Scrabble Championship.
A game of Scrabble can be very interesting and most games we play take around an hour to complete, with a break for tea and biscuits!
Summary: A good game for a family to play together
