Original Scrabble, the game of letters and words. The game comes boxed, inside there is a playing board, covered in squares, four plastic stands on which players stand their letters, a bag to hold the letters in and the letters themselves. The letters are made of good quality plastic squares with printed letters on the front. Also there is a small number near the letter, this number indicates the number of points each letter is worth. The game is for two to four players, recommended age is 10 years plus.

Aim of the game:

Each player initially starts with seven letters, the first player who starts the game makes a word in the middle of the board and counts up the numbers of each letter, this is the players score for that particular round. The next player then has to make a word using his letters and some of the letters already on the board. Words begin to form a pattern similar to a crossword. This continues until no player can make a word or until all letters have been used. The player with the greatest score is the winner. Some squares are 'special' squares in that if a word is formed via these squares, the points tally is doubled, or even tripled. Other squares give double or triple letter scores.

Verdict:

An excellent game of skill and chance. You need to keep your concentration at all times and have several options of words, because it always happens that someone uses the space you were about to use. A must is that you can spell in the first place, bigger words using the more obscure letters bring in the highest points. Overall an exciting game of strategy and thinking. Only negative point is that games can last a while and arguments of word validity always come up, especially if you don't have a dictionary to check. Seems costly for what it is, some places are selling this for approximately £14 - £15, but it is a good family game. Also great for nights in with friends, pizza and beer.

Summary: Excellent group game
