Advantages: Gets your brain in gear to come up with words from your letters

Disadvantages: Can get competitive and there's always someone who tries to make up words!!

I must admit I wasn't ever a Scrabble fan until I met my husband! His family had always played scrabble together on a regular basis, so it wasn't a surprise that my husband came had his own Scrabble board! One evening I decided to humour him and accept his invitation to play the game .... And I ended up really enjoying myself! If you haven't played before, the idea of Scrabble is that you are given a number of tiles, which each have a letter on it. Each letter has a set value in points and the aim is to try and create the best scoring words. Your tiles are 'topped up' each time you create a new word. On the Scrabble board, you'll find a grid to lay out the words and it includes several special spaces which will double or even triple that letter's value and sometimes your whole word's value! The first word is placed over the centre square and each subsequent word has to overlap an existing word on the board. So as well as being able to come up with good words, you also have to be tactically aware of placing them on double or triple score spaces - and trying to avoid leaving those spaces accessible to your opponents! You don't have to be a master of the English language (I'm certainly not!), as even smaller everyday words can get you a good score if you play them well! Keep a dictionary handy though, as there's always someone who'll try to get away with using a made up word!

Summary: Scrabble is a great family game which is good for getting your brain in gear!
