Advantages: Best travel time passer ever, Easy to play / fun, Portable, cheap travel version
Disadvantages: Wife get hump if she loses, Let wife win in case she gets the hump, Wife beats me whenever she wants to, honestly!
Holidays are the only time I really play Scrabble. I'm not going to repeat the other reviews here which do excellent jobs of telling you all about the game in detail. This is to remind or introduce you to something that you can take on any holiday - it weight less than a book and provides endless hours of light amusement. Why Travel Scrabble _________________ My holidays usually involve flying somewhere - which means inevitable wait at the airport and then sometimes long flights to endure. Unless you can watch endless mindless visual media or read forever - it is great to have something that eats that time and usually helps wind you down from work to play. Once we arrive the Scrabble board stays out of the suitcase. Then, its a slow game that lasts all day as we lounge on the beach (watch out for others changing their letters whilst you cool down in the sea!). Or a pre-dinner "quickie" - with speed assured by taking out of play as many letters as needed to reduce the time played. Families will appreciate the subtle and hidden edicational benefits of playing with kids. Those of a competitive nature might benefit from the Scrabble Dictionary to check those odd sounding words your partner seems to pull out when stuck for a decent score. Travel Scrabble Kit ________________ This is one cheap game - when you consider the hours per penny spent, Scrabble is phenomenal value. There are various versions these days:- The Deluxe Travel version offers a compact and robust fold away board. This is designed to holds the tiles and racks firmly in place. So you can pack up mid-game if you need to. The Pocket Scrabble set fits into your pocket of course. It is based on a folding board with magnetic tiles and tile racks. The tile bag which doubles as protective cover when the game is not in use. We use the latter as it is the most portable - you do have
to take care of the pieces and they are rather small. So those with poor fine motor control (clumsy fingers) might prefer the deluxe model. Often we don't keep score as this reduces the mild stress of winning or losing - but not the challenge or the fun! This is good practice with the kids. Just see who can get the highest word score. In summary - Scrabble is the fourth S on our holidays - I recommend you try it. Finally here are a few useful weblinks to find out more or check a word:- Chambers Word Checker - http://www.mattelscrabble.com/cgi-bin/chambers /scrabbleword.pl The main site with links by language / location - http://www.scrabble.com And if you are serious or want to depress yourself how low your score are then try http://www.scrabble-assoc.com
