Advantages: Cheap, and educational.
Disadvantages: None.
Scrabble is based around a board divided into equally sized squares. There are loads of square tiles with letters of the alphabet on, as well as two blank tiles. The players (up to 4) start by turning all the tiles face down, and shuffling them around, then each pick seven tiles, which are placed in that players letter rack, and concealed from view of their opponents. Each player takes one tile from the pile, and the player who draws the tile with the highest number (the letters are numbered from1 point to 10) starts the game by placing letters on the board to form a word. The other players take turns to add letters to form words, and if they're lucky, can get their tiles on a square with bonus points, and pick up either double or triple word or letter points, thus increasing their score. The game is over when there are no more tiles or when nobody can make a word, and the winner is the person who has the most points. A great game, and educational as well - recommended to everyone over the age of about 7 or 8.
