I was playing this yesterday with my family and now that it's fresh in my mind I thought I should review it.
Taboo is a board game where you play on teams (of at least 2 people per team) and you have to correctly guess what's on your teams card. The cards have 4 different colours on them relating to the difficulty you want to play the game at. Each card has a word in bold which is what the rest of your team have to guess, and underneath this word are the words you are not allowed to use to describe it. This can prove to be extremely difficult at times, which makes it more fun! The aim is to guess as many correctly as possible, and reach the end of the board first. The amount of items you guess correctly corresponds to the amount of spaces you go forwards.
An example from yesterday - The word I had to describe to the other person on my team was Lightning but I couldn't say thunder, storm, rain or Clouds, so I went completely off on a tangent saying that if you are in a car during this you should be safe and if you are under a tree you are not, and we did manage to get the point. Some of the ways people end up describing really simple items end up being extremely funny, and provide a lot of comedy.
The game comes with a board, counters to move depending on how many answers you get right, and a squeaker. The squeaker enables someone from another team to let people know if you have said a word that is not permitted. I have to say that this is very annoying and if you have dogs, they will not enjoy this, so we tend to just shout out instead.
On the board there are some special tiles which if you land on you get either double the time or you have to pick one person only on the team to guess instead of everyone. This makes the game a little bit more interesting.
The game costs around £35.00 to buy from various places, but it is very good quality and I can imagine it lasting for years, so while it is an expensive outlay it does seem to be a game that we keep going back to and is worth it for all the fun you will get out of it.
The game itself is fun to play and really makes you think hard about the words you use, and how to think outside the box to describe something without using the non-allowed words that relate to it. It's a great family game and can be played with anything from 4 people upwards, I imagine the more people you have playing it the funnier it is.
I would highly recommend this as a family fun game.
Summary: A great game that I would highly recommend for every family.
