Advantages: A brilliant family game
Disadvantages: sore losers cause injuries
This game is certainly a favourite in our house. Every christmas and get together this comes out. What is really good about it is that it is a team and there isn't a maximum number of players, just a minimum of 4 (2 in each team).
What you get in the box depends on your edition as they have changed since the game was first released in 1989. The early editions came with a board for each team to move along (whichever team reaches the end first would win) but mine does not have this. The game can be played for as long as you like really but depending on how many are playing we usually do the first team to get 100 correct answers wins.
You will also get a little plastic hour glass, which times one minute. This is how long each players turn lasts.
There are 2 blue trays to hold your cards in and this has a lid which flips open to hold the card you are currently using, while the lid hides the card from your teammates and the lid closes again to keep the cards safe and tidy. You get hundreds of cards which are double sided, one side for the blue teams words and the other for the pink teams words.
There was also a score pad, ours ran out years ago and we now just use a pen and paper.
Next comes the important part........the buzzer. In most editions this is a button on a plastic box which you put batteries in and it buzzes when you press it, that was too easy for us though and when we bought ours it came with a bright pink rubbery squeaker like a dog toy which is shaped like a flying saucer and you squeeze it and it makes the same noise as a dog toy. It's proper name is a "hooter".
This buzzer has caused so many problems that I was going to try and get one of the battery operated buzzers online but decided that the memories of this buzzer are part of the fun of playing.
The first time we played, the dog went absolutely crackers every time we squeezed it and kept trying to drag it out of the hand of whoever was holding it at the time.
The next issue we had was when one of my daughters (not a graceful loser) threw it at her sister who instantly developed a black eye. Who would have thought a rubbery thing full of air could cause so much damage. This isn't to mention the amount of times it has got thrown under and behind things. Use the buzzer (or squeaker as we call it) with caution.
So the aim of the game, one member of the blue team sits in facing their own team, with the opposite team sat behind them to see the answers. They have a word at the top of the card which they have to try and get their team to guess, they must do this whilst not using any of the words listed underneath.
For example if you are trying to get your team mates to say greenhouse, you will not be able to use the words glass, garden, plants etc.
If they use any of these words the dreaded buzzer is buzzed and they must move on to the next one and get a penalty point (we often don't bother with the penalty points). They continue to try and get through as many as they can before the timer runs out. The opposite team must do the same and each member of the team takes it in turn.
The game is very good fun some are easy, some not so easy and some of the guesses of the answers are absolutely hilarious. We also bought some new cards seperately for the game so we always have plenty of new words.
The game is for over 12s but we have played with under 12s and it is fine, there may be some words they are not sure about but the just skip over them. A junior version is also available.
We paid around £20 for the game and it seems to have stayed around the same price but is well worth it for the years of fun we've had out of it.
Summary: Realy good fun
