Forget everything you thought you knew about board- games. 'Euro games' are a new breed of exciting, fulfilling and sometimes complex strategy games. Agricola stands apart as the most critically acclaimed of these modern board games of the last 10 years. In Agricola you play a farmer, building a home, a farm, collecting animals and growing a family. If you are successful by the end of the game you will have a large house made of stone, fenced pastures of sheep, boar and cattle, a large family and ploughed fields filled with grain and vegtables and cooking tools to turn them into food. If you do not do so well, you might finish with a small wooden hut, a family of two, and empty spaces on your farm. Ultimately the better you do, the more points you get at the end of the game with minus marks for each empty category. The genius of the game is that it is different every time. New actions arrive each turn, allowing you to do more things as the game progresses. If you grow your family (essential if you want to win) you can take more actions each turn, making it easier to build your farm, but harder to feed everyone. In addition in the full game you are given a set of random cards at the start, allowing you to play different 'improvements' and 'occupations' to help you in the game. Agricola isn't for everyone, the rules, even the easier 'family game' are long and difficult to get to grips with at first. To begin with the game can seem cut-throat, as each round you need to find food for your family members, without which you resort to begging, giving you minus points at the end of the game. Despite this, the game is incredibly rewarding and very fun. The different cards give huge variety and you will find you want to play again and again. Agricola also plays well for up to 5 players - you can even play by yourself! This gives it enormous replay-ability and allows you to explore many different strategies. Unlike Monopoly, nobody gets knocked out , and nobody falls out. A great family game.
