I have sail tested this vessel several time before purchasing a Dehler DS 41. After I have sail test the DS. I have sailed Pacific Seacraft 37, T-10, and Controversy 29. While sailing the T-10 during a race on Labor Day weekend 2002 between Michigan City, Indiana, and Chicago Illinois, we have faced squall with winds exceeding 27 knots and waves in the range of 7 to 10 feet. After the squall, the sky cleared quickly and the wind shifted to the south to create favorable condition for our boat to build speed. We sail with Jib and Main sails alone. Even if the wind exceed the 25knots the T-10 never exceed 9.67knots. The Dehler 41 DS under less favorable condition 15 to 18 knots and waves 5 to 7 feet exceeded 10knost on the run. In close reach the Dehler 41 DS has maintain and exceeded 8.5knots. In term of stability, I have sailed a Pacific SeaCraft 37 a day of great wind and gust. We were sailing a close reach with the engine running at 2,200 rpm. The wind was constantly about 18 knots and peaking at 28. The waves were 4 to 6 feet and the boat never exceeded the 7 knots even with the engine running. In term of stability the Pacific Seacraft with her long keel is very stable. With her heavy displacement the vessel has punched the waves more than once. In comparison the Dehler 41-DS stands high on the waves and keep her course strait even in confused sea. Her movement is smooth and predictable. The DS is a beautiful boat to sail. She can be handle by a couple without pain; thank to the two power winches and all the lines running to back of the cockpit near the large wheel. Below deck the navstation is spacious, the dining area is large enough for 8 even if the boat cannot sleep more than 6 at the time. For a couple with two children or two couples the boat is perfect for a weeklong cruise. The stove is at the end of the galley against the wall of the master stateroom. While cooking you
r back lays against the door of the only head (extremely spacious) on the boat. The Deck Salon gives you an impressive view outside and with the remote control of the Raymarine Autohelm 6000, you can pilot and tack the boat from inside; thank to the self-tacking jib! For me this is became the Ultimate sailing Machine that I'm eager to take to Ireland and UK next year. Gaetan Charest, Chicago area
