Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Doesn't do anything
What should a bath essence actually do? What is its function? Should it colour the bath water, make it silky or moisturising? Should it perfume the water, or act as a pick-me-up for the senses? Should it cleanse and soften the skin? Provide a bathful of bubbles to sink into and relax?
I don't think it's too much to ask that this pomegranate and fig bath essence do at least one of the things above. But when I tested it, it did nothing.
Pouring it into the bathtub under hot running water, I found that it hardly foamed up at all. Even though I ended up using 100ml of the stuff at once and whisking it vigorously around with my hands, it only produced a thin, flat layer of pathetically tiny bubbles that were gone after 5 minutes.
The smell was as weak as the foaming action and too sickly sweet - sniffing the bottle I could faintly detect the scent of fig mixed with something not far off Turkish Delight. Its perfume seemed to disappear on contact with the water.
There was no discernable moisturising or smoothing action from the bath essence - my skin felt quite dry when I emerged from the bath, just as it usually does if I don't use any products.
The bath water remained clear as though I hadn't added anything. This prompted me to use some shower gel as I didn't feel that the bath essence was having any cleansing effect.
The packaging was satisfactory - a clear, sturdy bottle with an attractive photo of some ripe fruit and the price was not bad for a bath product: £2.43 for 400ml. But considering it doesn't actually do anything it's extremely poor value!
The description on the back of the bottle says the product will "soothe and relax". It made absolutely no difference to my bathing experience though.
I've tried other Active:Naturals products from Sainsbury's and really liked them, so I won't write off the range completely, but I certainly wouldn't buy this product again.
Summary: About as much use as a chocolate teapot
