Alba Botanica Pineapple Citrus Body Cream
Advantages: Softens skin beautifully and free from chemicals.
Disadvantages: The fragrance is a little too light for me.
Recently I completed an order from one of my favourite online heath food retailers at www.yourhealthfoodstore.co.uk. It was just prior to my holiday in Arizona, and I was looking for some body cream to take with me. I was particularly seeking something with a fresh summer scent, and in particular, a product which was as natural as possible.
I came across a cream which I thought had been beautifully packaged in a pale green and yellow tub. This Pineapple and Citrus Body Cream was made by a company called Alba, which was new to me then. However, a few weeks later on visiting a large whole foods store in America I was to see shelves of the product, and many other variants being sold in abundance.
I paid £7.48 for the tub, which was a generous 650g size. I thought this was exceptional value for a product which is made without parabens. These natural toiletries often carry hefty price tags, making them unaffordable to many on a regular basis, so this range is well worth seeking out if, like me, you favour natural cosmetics and bath time treatments. As this product is made in the US the price is even more reasonable given the transport costs involved.
Part of Avalon Organics, Alba is a company who has very strict policies regarding sustainability and the environment, as well as a commitment to leave chemicals out of their products. They have been trading since 1979, and have a long history of success in the US market where they are based. Their offices and warehouses are solar powered, and they use every possible method of reducing the impact they have on the environment from recycling to supporting organic farming.
The Pineapple Citrus Body Cream is part of a range they call Hawaiian. You can also choose to purchase the Coconut Milk Body Cream or the Papaya and Mango Body Cream, which are both in this range. They also have other products in this range including lip balms and shower gels, and you can visit the Alba website at www.albabotanica.com. This website gives an excellent introduction to their products, and also to their ethical policies which are at the forefront of everything they do.
The main ingredient in the Pineapple Citrus Body Cream is, as you would expect - pineapple, which has anti- inflammatory properties as well as being rich in anti-oxidants. In addition to this the cream has Aloe Vera, Papaya, Mango and Guava extracts, and is rich in oils, especially Macadamia and Kukui, and the oil also has Shea Butter for its moisturising properties. Kukui Oil, which was a new ingredient to me, is collected from the nut of the Hawaiian Candlenut Tree. Many people find it beneficial if they have eczema as it contains high levels of linoleic acid in the oil, which is soothing and has anti- inflammatory properties. It is also rather good at treating sunburn, and so I was eager to purchase when I discovered this as my holiday was going to involve a lot of time in desert temperatures. Also this cream contains coconut oil, rosehip oil, and there are lavender flowers, though there is no scent of lavender at all in the finished cream.
The cream is a delicate shade of off while and it has soft milk like consistency. It isn't thick and difficult to apply, and it glides onto your hand with minimal effort and rubs in easily. The fragrance is very simple and understated. I was expecting a strong pineapple scent, but it isn't - in some ways I was a little disappointed in this, as the range of ingredients would suggest that opening the lid would reveal a tropical explosion of fruity aromas. However, it is pure and simple - pleasant but not overpowering. I have to confess I would like to turn up the fragrance button somewhat, as it is lacking in the intensity which would drive me into purchasing purely for this attribute. On reflection though, I think this is the price you pay for simplicity, as there are no synthetic fragrances at work in this product.
Having said this I feel the moisturising qualities are very good indeed with this cream, and after my bath I often apply this especially to my legs if I have shaved. This is where this cream really excels as it soothes any areas which are slightly uncomfortable, and by the morning they feel moisturised and soft. It particularly suggests using this cream on heels, elbows, and anywhere that you have flaky or very dry skin. I have been using it on my heels and they have become very soft indeed in a few weeks.
It isn't greasy and it doesn't leave oily residue on the sheets, or on your clothes, as some products do. It makes an excellent face moisturiser, too though it is not sold for that purpose. I have used it if my skin feels dry and it works beautifully. I also use it as a hand cream during the day and it is really good for this as it does not leave any greasy residue at all, but leaves hands soft and comfortable.
The fragrance is, as I said, not particularly strong, so it does not linger on the skin for many hours after application. This is a pity because it would enhance its appeal if it did, I have no doubt.
All the ingredients are vegetarian and vegan, and of course the company has strict policies on any kind of animal testing which is simply not allowed.
I think this cream is very good indeed. I am rating it 4* as I would dearly love it to be slightly more fragrant, but this may of course not be possible within the framework of the ingredients. The attributes this cream has from packaging through to moisturising qualities are truly superb though, and I will continue to purchase, as to date this is one of the most moisturising creams I have tried.
The cream is available from yourhealthfoodstore.co.uk and shopping though a cash back site such as Topcashback will yield as much as 4% back on purchases.
This review will also be published on Ciao under my user name Violet1278.
Summary: A good purchase for a sensible price.
