Advantages: Protects your skin, smells lovely

I love the smell of Garnier Ambre Solaire it always reminds me of holidays, beaches and lovely sunny days.

Garnier Ambre Solaire suncream protects the skin against UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deeply into the skin and can cause long term skin damage such as skin cancer and premature ageing. UVB rays are responsible for sunburn. So by using it you are protecting your skin against all the nasty things the sun can do to it.

I love the sun and like to tan a little bit. But there's no getting away from the fact that a tan is your skin's way of protecting itself from the sun and it's a form of damage, however healthy it makes you look. So you can over do it, people who tan their skin to the colour of mahogany must be mad. Also, another thing I get on my soapbox about is what you see in England everytime the sun comes out, people who seem to have gone out and fried their skin.

According to the Department of Health's (www.doh.gov.uk) website's sun section section, the last 20 years have seen a doubling in skin cancer cases, due to greater sun bathing trends and more people taking foreign holidays to hotter places. Skin cancer is the second most common cancer in the UK, 40,000 new cases are diagnosed a year.

Ambre Solaire, along with most health recommendations that I've come across recommend that you apply a minimum of SPF 15 to your skin. The SPF of a sunscreen is your skin's natural protection against the sun before burning (I'm not sure about this, but I think it's 10-15 minutes) times the number on the bottle. For example SPF15 is 15 times your skin's natural protection time against the sun.

As a general rule the darker your skin is the less risk you have of skin cancer. People with fair or freckled skins, lots of moles and who always burn are at the biggest risk of skin cancer and need to wear a high sun protection sunscreen or even a sunblock. Those with more olive ski
n, that tans easily are at less risk. Black and Asian skins have the lowest risk of developing skin cancer. I use SPF25, to be on the safe side. The department of Health's website have a short test you can take to determine what sun protection advice fits your skin type.

Sunscreens should be applied before you can go out, so that you can cover all areas that will be exposed. Also it needs time to sink in and doesn't start working the second that you apply it. I can't count the number of times I've got lovely suncream blobs on my clothes, because I'm trying to apply cream to awkward, exposed areas.You should reapply your suncream frequently and after being in water. Ambre Solaire is water resistant and lasts for 40 minutes in the water.

It is quite pricey and you won't get much change out of £10, when you buy it. However, that's a small price to pay for protecting against skin cancer, burning and prematurely old skin. It's downside is that it can be quite hard to rub in. You need to make sure it's been absorbed into your skin, otherwise you will end up with attractive white patches.

It has moisturising properties, so that your skin will not become dried out by using it. Ambre Solaire has been developed to be hypoallergenic, which means it's ok for sensitive skins as the risk of allergic reactions is lessened.
