Avon Planet Spa Dead Sea Minerals Body Butter
Advantages: Lovely packaging, sinks in quickly, leaves skin feeling lovely
Disadvantages: scent isn't very nice, price is quite high for an Avon product
I have dry skin so need to keep it moisturised to prevent it going dry and scaly...let's face it the lizard look isn't particularly attractive! The latest product I have been using is Avon's Planet Spa Dead Sea Minerals nourishing body butter. I received this from my mother for my birthday back in August, as being an Avon rep, I almost always exclusively receive Avon gifts from her. I do particularly like the Planet Spa range and find a lot of the products to be good quality and well packaged in comparison to some of the other Avon ranges.
This product came in a grey box with a modern swirly pattern, and inside is a plastic kilner style jar containing the body butter. I personally think the packaging looks impressive, although I must note that at just 200ml the tub was smaller than I expected it to be, given the size of the box it comes in. There is a grey sticker on the top of the tub advising of its contents and I find the metal catch to be easy enough to open and close.
The spiel on the Avon website describes this product as 'an ultra rich cream formulated with Dead Sea salts' and that it provides long lasting 24 hour moisturisation to leave skin hydrated soft and silky smooth.
This is not the first dead sea minerals product that I have used from Planet Spa, so I can confirm that it has the same scent as others in the range. Unfortunately, I have to say that this scent is not particularly pleasant. It is a particularly masculine smelling product and that alone puts me off. It has quite a sharp smell to it, although I find it difficult to pick out exactly what the scent is. The only thing that springs to mind is when you get very cheap shower gels or cleaning products which call themselves 'sea' or 'ocean' fragranced. It's not completely awful, but I'm really not a fan of it, so it's one I only really apply when I know I'll be sitting in the house and not going anywhere.
I often find body butters to be too thick and greasy, even for my dry skin, but I actually thought the consistency of this one was lovely. It's very thick, but I'd say a slightly thinner consistency than butter. It is definitely not as thick as the Body Shop body butters, but too thick to be described as a lotion.
The body butter is white in colour and I find that it smoothes across the skin easily and also feels quite cooling. I like my body moisturisers to sink in quickly as there is nothing worse than feeling like you have a layer of grease on your skin, or getting dressed only to find your clothes are sticking to you. Initially when this product is applied to the skin it does feel a little like it is sitting on top of your skin, however after around a minute it seems to have absorbed fully. Although I'd prefer it to sink in instantly, I don't think a minute is too bad, especially as this is a body butter rather than a lotion.
Once this has sunk in, I find that it leaves my skin feeling wonderfully soft and hydrated, with no stickiness or tackiness to the skin. This product even manages to hydrate the worst dry patches I get - usually on my knees. The smell once this has been applied is much more subtle than when in the tub, however it is still strong enough that I can smell it on my skin while wearing it.
I was surprised to find that a 200ml tub of this body butter costs £8 from Avon. I actually feel that this is quite expensive for an Avon product, and can't help but feel you are paying for fancy packaging more than the product itself. You can buy from your local Avon rep or online at www.avonshop.com
I have found it quite difficult to decide on a rating for this product. I like the packaging and I love the way that it makes my skin feel after application. I feel that the price is a little on the high side though and I really don't like the scent, as I feel it smells masculine and even cheap. I think I will have to go with three stars, as I personally wouldn't buy a replacement one when this runs out due to the scent.
Summary: If they made the same product in a different scent I'd buy it!
