Avon Skin So Soft Soft & Glow Satin Glow Daily Body Moisturizer
Advantages: Very good moisturizer with a nice smell and a shimmer that will enhance an existing tan
Disadvantages: The self-taning for which it is advertised doesn't work
In short, this is one of those body lotions that seem to appear now everywhere, which contain a small amount of self tan that builds up gradually to give the user a light tan.
It seemed to be the perfect timing with the endless rain we had back then and a winter that didn't seem to want to end - even if this is only a distant memory now that the heat is on.
Well, after this long winter my skin tone resembled the colour of yoghurt - not a shade that I fancy.
At first I was reluctant as I had a nasty experience with self tan in the past that left me truly tangoed but, after reading some very positive reviews about similar products, decided to give it a go in order to get my arms and legs to a more appealing shade.
The promise :
Avon advertises this as a moisturizer that, unlike self tan, gradually builds up natural looking colour while being a skin softening and nourishing body lotion with natural light reflecting pigments to illuminate the skin.
They also give a colour chart which shows some very impressing results as to which shade your skin might change within only 1,2 or 3 days of usage.
Now that the holiday season is on they also promise that the product will help you to keep that holiday feeling, which means, that it makes your tan last for longer.
To me it sounded fine, although I had two worries about using it as, firstly, I have very dry skin on my upper arms and legs and wasn't too sure, if the body lotion would be able to deal with that. I didn't really fancy to use two body lotions at once just to prevent my skin from becoming flaky. That would be a bit too much of plasterwork for my taste - especially with different scents applied that might clash.
The second worry dates back to an event about ten years ago, for which I had decided to pep up my natural skin tone with some self tan. Well, you might guess, it left me truly tangoed - shining like a well polished orange. Ever since I've avoided self tanning products like the pest.
The product :
Avon's Satin Glow Daily Body Moisturizer comes in a 250 ml tube and is available in two different shades, either for fair skin tones or for medium skin tones.
The product itself is much less runny than I expected from a body lotion and rather has the consistency of a light cream. It is clear white, a fact that always surprises me if confronted with any product that contains self tan, as my brain just seems to yearn for them to be of a "tanned" colour.
Satin Glow Daily Body Moisturizer has a smell that it very appealing - at least to me. I'm not good at describing smells, my sense of smell is probably my worst developed one, but I'll give it a try for you:
Very fresh, with maybe a hint of Citrus, not overpowering - so it won't clash with your perfume- and, most of all, not resembling this awkward aroma of self tan you usually get when using it.
All in all I would say that it is a very feminine, slightly elegant smell, not too sweet and to me it is one of the most pleasant ones I have found in an independent body lotion that doesn't belong to a favoured perfume in quite a while.
It lingers around for quite a while and I have found that if I apply it in the evening after taking shower, that it is still clearly detectable in the morning.
Like any other body lotion you just apply it all over your body. It absorbs easily and doesn't feel greasy afterwards at all.
For the best results you are advised to use it daily and, like with every product that contains sun tan, you'll have to wash your hands after the application and should avoid to get it in your eyes.
Maybe this is the best time to mention, that this product is not meant to end up in your face at all. If you are looking for something to get a bit of tan in your face - this is not the one, there are special products for face tanning available, this one is only to be used on body parts that commence from the chin on downwards.
The result :
After the first application I was really impressed by the lovely smell and realised soon that I didn't need to worry about its qualities as a moisturizer as it did not only absorb very well, but also left my skin feeling soft and smooth. No flaky bits, dry feeling or itchiness at all, so it gets the thumbs up from me for the moisturizer and the smell.
The body lotion contains light reflecting pigments which I wasn't able to see in the cream before I've applied it and it really gives your skin a bit of a glow or shine. That looks especially good if you already do have a bit of a tan.
So I applied, smelled the scent, admired the sheen it produced all over my body and waited for the tanning effect to kick in. Remember - after just one day they said ?
Well, after just one day my reflection was still as white as before, although with lovely shine to it.
After two days - still no change.
After three days - nope, nothing, but husband started to tease me.
After approximately one week after I first started using it, the sun finally came out and I've got some real tan on me - apart from that, all body parts that haven't been exposed to the sun are still nearly as white as before.
It does tan a bit after a while, but certainly not after one day, more likely after one week - and the results are ever so subtle and certainly not as dramatic as pictured in the chart that Avon uses in it's brochure. So zero points in that aspect.
I still use it, not only because my tube isn't finished yet - it goes quite a long way, you don't need too much and mine has lasted now for about 4 weeks - I've even ordered a new one by now. I really like it as a moisturizing body lotion where it does a great job and , in case I haven't mentioned it yet, I really like the smell.
Once you are tanned it really seems to live up to the expectations and the shimmering particles it contains really enhance the colour and do give you a glowing look. Even my husband, who is usually rather indifferent to things like this, realised it and liked the effect.
If it will keep my suntan from fading away is something I'll probably only find out if we should experience a longer spell of bad weather or when the summer is over. But after the disappointment with the self-tanning effect I very much doubt so, as I can't really see how it possibly should be able to prolong a suntan if it is not able to produce one in the first place.
I will continue to use it , at least throughout the summer, as the tanning effect of the lotion has now become less important for me and I am quite impressed with its qualities as a body lotion - and I have become quite fond of the shimmer it produces, but will surely look for something else once I feel the desire to enhance my suntan, when it starts to fade away.
So I only can recommend it to everyone who is looking for a body lotion with a little extra summery twist and a great smell, but for all those who really want something to build up some colour - stay way ! Hence the rating 3/5.

At the time of writing the official retail price is £ 5 for a tube containing 250 ml, which sounds a bit steep, but this being Avon I can assure you that there is always some kind of offer going on. Like now get it half-price, or buy 1 get 1 free in the next brochure, so I'm quite sure that you won't be forced to fork out the whole amount for just one tube.
