Advantages: This leaves you relaxed and refreshed

Disadvantages: It can be costly if used daily

Everyone knows how much I love trying out new pampering treats. Just before Christmas, my own personal Santa Claus (in the form of my other half!) asked me what presents I wanted for the season of good will. Naturally Lush bathtime goodies were high on the agenda, and needless to say I wasn’t disappointed. Bathos is a bubble bar that I have seen every time I’ve visited a Lush shop, but never actually got around to trying it, ao I was very excited to receive a lovely purple smelly bar in my stocking!

*** What’s all this about Lush?***

Lush originated in the late 70's when in 1978 the team sold its first product to the Body Shop. In 1988 Cosmetics to Go was launched in Poole, Dorset, where Bath Bombs, Shampoo Bars and Massage Bars were invented. However, it wasn't until 1994 after Cosmetics to Go went under, Lush was launched with huge success, and today they have 100+ shops around the world, also operating mail order businesses from the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy, and Japan. The great thing about Lush is that they handmake their cosmetics in their own production facilities, so that every product available in the shops or sent by mail is as fresh as it can possibly be. It is also great to say that Lush is also very strongly against animal testing, which so few cosmetic companies are.

*** Why is this bubble bar so good? ***

Lush produce a number of bubble bars that vary in ingredients and smells, designed to suit specific needs. For example, the French Kiss bubble bar contains lavender, thyme and rosemary t designed for relaxing. However, whereas others are great just for pampering, and generally nice smelling, Bathos contains specific essential oils for a sensual, relaxing bath. These include, Rose Absolute, an uplifiting fragrance designed to balance emotions, Ylang Ylang and Jasmine Oil, very sensual and relaxing fragrances, which is also great for moisturising. Bergamot Oil (a citrus aroma) a refreshing and cleansing fragrance, and Clove Bud Oil, an antiseptic with a distinct spicy aroma to warm and sooth the body. One of the main ingredients is violet leaf which is reputed (by Lush!) to help people remember why they got together in the first place!

*** How will I spot it? ***

At first glance I actually thought the bar was a bright mauve pumice stone! But when you touch the bar, it is extremely soft, and crumbles very easily. There is an indention in middle of the bar with a green glittery capital ‘B’, in a Greek style of writing, cungering an image of ancient Greece as your troubles melt away in the bath! If you don’t see it, you’ll certainly smell it as the Jasmine and Ylang Ylang hit you instantly.

*** Ok, I’m interested. How does it work? ***

I always go the whole hog if I’m drawing a Lush bath! Candles, soft music, the works! Once you’ve got the atmosphere sorted, you can do one of 2 things….turn on the taps and put the whole bar under water and watch it fizz away. However, the bubbles tend to go to one end of the bath. So, I break the bar in my hands and hold a large chuck under the tap, and keep doing this until it’s gone, so the bubbles are evenly dispersed. The amount of water softening bicarbonate of soda allows the bubbles to keep growing until the bath is completely covered, while the lovely aroma of jasmine and ylang ylang fill the room. Underneath the bubbles, the water magically turns to a soothing shade of violet which does not stain sponges or flannels and looks incredibly fun!

So now’s the time to dive in, lay back and immerse yourself in the soft bubbles, and let the troubles melt away. I was extremely tense before the bath, but within a few minutes I felt so relaxed that I could have easily fallen asleep. I was also extremely surprised that after 30 minutes the bubbles were still going strong, the aroma of essential oils seemed to get stronger, and I wasn’t even wrinkly! I could have easily stayed in the bath for another half hour!

Upon drying, my skin still felt incredibly soft, and the fresh floral scent stayed on my skin for hours, and I had a great nights sleep. Best of all, the green glitter disappears, so you will not get that sparkly effect!

*** Who can you use it? ***

Absolutely anybody! Infact kids will probably have more fun than you with this! However, if you or your child has sensitive skin, or you are pregnant, I would recommend consulting a doctor before use as the product contains essential oils, which can cause a reaction.

*** How much will it set me back?***

£1.95 for 100g to be precise. This is on the cheaper end of the bubble bar range. (Little monkey £1.50, and French Kiss £2.95) Unless you’re a millionaire this would not be economical for everday use, but the odd bubble bar here and there for a night of pampering is worth the cost considering its effect.

*** Surely there must be some drawbacks?***

Unfortunately yes, just one minor detail. As the bar contains numerous essential oils, I found my bath to be slightly slippery, which could cause an accident. So along as you are careful when stepping in and out, you will be fine!

*** Ok, I'm sold! Where can I buy one? ***

Check out your local lush store. However, if you don't live near a lush store, you can also purchase products online through www.lush.co.uk. There is a charge for delivery so make it worthwhile! I prefer to visit a store as you can sift through all the lovely smells, however if you are buying a gift or know what you want then head for the PC.

*** To round up…***

I was extremely impressed with the effects of the Bathos bubble bar. Not only was I left relaxed, but surprisingly, my skin felt and even smelled great! It may be costly to use everyday, but great for the occasional pampering treat if your skin is feeling worse for wear, or you just need a quick fix boost. It is a marvellous mauve miracle that will leave you feeling fresh and stressed free!
