Advantages: Beautiful fragrance, Moisturises the skin

Disadvantages: None

Let?s set the scene. It was Valentines Day. The next day would be my birthday. I had been spoiled rotten all day beginning with the florist delivering me a single red rose. I had a birthday cake cooked by the children, and I didn?t even have to clear up the chocolate sludge filled kitchen worktops. I spent the day relaxing, having ?my? time, and we decided to rent a move from Sky in the evening.

Just before Christmas I had a splurge on the Lush website and treated myself to all manner of pampering items, followed by a shopping trip to our local store at the beginning of February. As I sat waiting for the film to begin I realised I had nearly an hour to kill, so decided to go and have a long soak in the bath with one of my Lush Goodies.

Lush produce a large range of bubble bars and I have purchased most of them since discovering that I have a Lush addiction that needs to be fed on a regular basis. The bubble bars contain bicarbonate of soda and other bubbly stuff, and Lush promise that after you have bathed in a bath filled with a bubble bar, you will never want or need to dip your bits into a normal bath again. I spotted the Bathos bubble bar on the site during my last online shop, and was attracted to it more for its colour than anything else.

Bathos is a vibrant shade of purple and violet, and is formed into a rounded rectangular slice of lilac luxury. On its surface the bar has a capital B embossed into its top in a Greek style of writing, and the name itself conjures up images of the Ancient Greeks. I wonder if it?s going to make me feel as though I have languished in a bath of asses milk?

On first appearance, you could be forgiven for thinking that the Bathos bar is going to have the texture of a pumice stone. The bar has a rough texture, with little dents and hole
s over its surface, and as I release it from its wrappings, I am treated to a veritable whiff of a light floral scent, mixed with a faint aroma of citrus.

The look of Bathos is very deceiving. When I hold the bar in my hands, it is actually soft to the touch, and it is easy to break a chunk off. Although the bar crumbles easily, if you squeeze it within the hands, it binds into a lilac ball, and feels almost squidgy to the touch.

Bubble bars are very simple to use. Simply run steaming hot water into your bath, and break a piece of the bubble bar off in the hands, holding it under the water as it cascades from the taps. Do not throw the bar into the bath as it needs to be crumbled in order to maximize the bubbles produced.

With the bath taps turned on full, I hold my chunk of lilac luxury under the water, and crumble it gently. As soon as the bar makes contact with the water, huge clouds of soft white bubbles teem into the bath water, the mounds growing bigger by the second. Lush recommend that a full bubble bar is used to maximise the bubbly experience but I only used about a quarter of my bar and the resulting bubbles were simply astonishing.

The bathroom is filled with the smell of violets, roses and jasmine, although it did take me a while to work out what the beautiful scent was as it seems to deepen in intensity whilst the bath is running. The scent of the bar is totally different when it comes into contact with the water from the smell when in its packaging. The citrus undertones come more to the fore, and the resulting smell is a floral fruity concoction that is quite wonderful. Bathos contains rose, jasmine and ylang ylang oil, all of which are recognised for their relaxing properties, and also a dash of violet leaf, so it is no wonder that the floral scent from the bar is quite amazing. Add to the flowery aroma a dash of bergamot and clove
oil, and perhaps you can imagine the amazing scent that comes from this bar. No? Well you?ll just have to buy one yourself.

Climbing into the bath I realise that the water underneath the bubbles has gone a gorgeous shade of lilac and it?s as if I?m slipping my body into a strangely coloured milkshake with a frothy topping.

The bubbles are incredibly soft, and have whipped themselves into a mountainous frenzy so that the bath literally overflows. All this from a quarter of a bar. I feel like I?ve died and gone to heaven. Laying back in the bath I can imagine I am literally floating on clouds and the overwhelming sense of total and utter relaxation envelops me like a cloud. As well as creating a violet haze in the water, Bathos also has very tiny pieces of glitter, which make the marshmallow-like bubble mounds twinkle and shine as the light catches them.

Laying back into the bubbles, the scent of violets is much stronger and instantly relaxes me, to the extent that it is quite possible that I could fall asleep in my floral and citrus scented bathroom. After laying in the bath for half an hour my skin was not wrinkled, nor does it dry out, instead it feels as soft as the skin of a Greek goddess and deliciously moisturised. After towelling myself dry, I am surprised at the softness and smoothness of my skin, and the sweet scent of flowers and tangy citrus fruits still linger around me in a floral, fruity haze for hours afterwards.

It would be fair to say that bathing in a Bathos bath is one of the most pleasurable and relaxing experiences I have ever encountered and one that I want to repeat many more times in the future. Best of all though Bathos doesn?t break the bank. At only £1.95 for a 100g slice, Bathos is a little piece of luxury and decadence at an affordable price. Bathos is a bar for the evenings, to wallo
w in its purple depths and relax your body and your mind. If you?ve had a hard day and need a little pampering to feel like a Greek Goddess, pop into Lush on the way home and bag yourself a bar of Bathos. You won?t regret it.

Oh no! I had about five opinions open and then had to answer the phone. I've just said "hedonist" on someone else's opinion! AAAARGH.

I'm more of a shower person in general - but this does sound very tempting for an occasional luxury. Sue
