Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Not really up to the job
This is my second review talking about my obsession with body hair, and this time it's the dreaded bikini wax that it under scrutiny. I am rather embarrassingly going to admit that prior to having my baby I had actually perfected the art of an at home Hollywood wax. For those who are not familiar with this the Hollywood is everything off. It's not actually as painful as you might think, but if you are a beginner at home waxing I would recommend starting with you legs to perfect the technique.
Post baby I neither have the time nor the inclination for the full Hollywood however I couldn't cope with going natural so just wanted something I could use to tidy up my bikini line. I began my search for a simple, no mess, no fuss home wax kit with Boots expert bikini waxing kit.
This waxing kit is part of Boots Expert range and is priced at £3.91, you can often find it on special offer though as buy one get one half price.
In the box you get an instruction leaflet, 4 individually packaged moisturising finishing wipes and a packet of 20 wax strips. Normal waxing warnings are printed on the box which state they shouldn't be used on broken or damaged skin, varicose veins or skin that bruises easily. Pregnant women should not use them. You should also avoid sun bed use for 8 hours after waxing, and you should not use deodorant or lotion with high alcohol content for 24 hours following waxing. They also recommend to do a patch test 24 hours prior to use.
Late one evening after my baby had gone to sleep to night I got out this waxing kit and got myself prepared. I opened the packet of wax strips and was greeted with a pleasant, slightly floral scent. There are 10 pairs of wax strips in the pack which you have to separate to use. This is where the first instruction falls down, you have to warm the strips between your hands then pull them apart and use immediately. This is fine for the first strip of the pair but you cannot do this with the second as you would be covered in wax. Instead I had to fold the second strip in half warm it between my hands, then peel it open and use.
The instructions direct you to apply the strip directly onto the skin in the direction of the hair growth, hold the skin taut with one hand and immediately pull the strip back on itself very quickly. I followed these instructions exactly. After using the first wax strip I noticed that it had left more than half the hairs on the area I had waxed. Previous experience with waxing has taught me that you should not keep going over the same area as this can cause damage to the skin. Using the second wax strip I went over the area again and to my disappointment there was still lots of hair left behind. The instructions say that each strip can be used 3 times, however what ever I tried each strip was only good for one use, even folding it to agitate the wax didn't help.
As I had already filled out the suggestion for this product to Dooyoo I felt I had to give it a full test and I reluctantly used the rest of the strips in the pack. To say I was unhappy with the results was an understatement. I only went over each area 3 times as my skin began to feel sore on the 3rd attempt, I was left with patchy results and the next morning I noticed 3 areas on my skin where it had caused damage.
This method was more painful than the hot wax method I had used at home previously and the results were poor. I would definitely not recommend this product for bikini waxing, its just not up to the job. I did like the moisturising wipes they provided in the pack, they were gentle on my skin and quickly removed the wax that was left behind. I think I will have to go back to the slightly more fiddly, but much more effective microwave hot wax.
Summary: I would give this one a miss if i were you
