Advantages: Quick and easy to use
Disadvantages: Does not remove thick hair
Two years ago, I was spending about £50-£100 every month in the beauty salon which I couldn't afford. With my bank balance deeply in the red I made the decision that this was the first thing I had to change. No more manicure, facial, spray tan and worst of all no more waxing. Luckily for me body hair became my last priority. During this time I have had IVF treatment and had my gorgeous baby boy.
I was looking in the mirror around 2 months ago at 11pm when my baby was finally asleep and realised in horror that I had a faint moustache above my lip and my eyebrows looked like I had come from planet of the apes. The following day I went into boots and discovered Boots expert facial waxing strips.
They currently cost £3.42, and are on special offer, buy one get one half price. Inside the packet are 2 clear packs with 8 wax strips in each. The instructions recommended that you test a small area first before going on to use the product, I did follow this guidance because I have very sensitive skin which is prone to irritation. I just used one wax strip to test a small area above my lip, I had no reaction after 24 hours so went on to use the strips. They recommend that hair is at least 4mm long for waxing.
There are several warnings on the box, which are pretty standard for any waxing. They shouldn't be used on broken or damaged skin, varicose veins or skin that bruises easily. Pregnant women should not use them. You should also avoid sun bed use for 8 hours after waxing.
The strips themselves are quite fiddly. There are 4 strips per sheet, separated by a perforated line. The perforation was pretty useless so I had to use scissors to separate the strips.
Usual waxing recommendations apply with these strips, use on clean dry skin, and apply a small amount of talc prior to waxing.
First I waxed my upper lip, I was able to use each strip twice. They are 1.5 inches long so after one use I turned the strip round and used on the next patch. It is easy to get the skin taught above the lip, you just have to move your mouth to the positions you seen men pulling when they shave. I needed 3 strips in total to get rid of all the hairs above my lip, it was pretty painless and the redness had gone within half an hour. It took less than 5 minutes on my first attempt at home waxing. I did not need to repeat this for 6 weeks
Next came the eyebrows, or maybe not. I used the remaining 5 strips from the pack I had opened and not one hair came out. The wax was just not enough to remove the thick eyebrow hair, no matter what angle I tried to use them in. Back to the tweezers for my eyebrows I'm afraid.
I would recommend these wax strips for fine hairs but they do nothing for thicker hair. I have continued to use this product for the hairs above my lip.
Summary: Only buy these if you are using on thin, fluffy hairs.

- 14/04/09 I tried these on those horrid thick black post-menopausal hairs that are fervently sprouting at great speed out from places that I wish they wouldn't....the strips removed some, but not all of them, so I had to go back to my trusty old tweezers. |
