Boots Extracts Fairtrade Mango Body Butter
Advantages: Easy to apply, quickly absorbed, softens skin
Disadvantages: Offputting smell
I recently received a beautiful gift bag full of Boots Fair Trade products and excitedly pulled out item after item. After reading numerous reviews on these sort of gift boxes/bags on Dooyoo I was feeling increasingly left out as, although my mum often buys me one off toiletries or little duty free packs, I rarely get this kind of beautiful presentation pack filled with goodies! One of the items, and the one I'm concentrating on for this review was the Boots Extracts Mango Body Butter. That alone was enough to further increase my excitement levels (yes, ok, I'm a bit sad and getting sadder all the time the more reviews I read!). I've tried lots of body lotions and body sprays over the years but never tried a body butter and, I have to say, my curiosity had well and truly been tweaked by several excellent reviews of various ones. I should probably point out that I would never have gone into Boots and chosen this myself as I'm not a fan of fruity smells when it comes to toiletries.
As this body butter came as part of a gift pack it is only a small 50ml tub, rather than the standard 200ml tub which sells at Boots for £7.95 (although it's currently on a 3 for 2 offer. The smaller tub is an exact replica of the larger version however. I like the design of the packaging as it means you can scoop every last bit of the product out and not waste a drop. It is a translucent plastic, so you can see the colour of the body butter through it and how much you have left. It is topped by a screw top lid in bright orange, presumably to emphasise the mango. A round label in the centre of the lid informs us that it is a fair trade product, providing a better deal for producers in developing countries (nobody can argue that that is ever a bad thing!) and that the butter moisturises and hydrates to leave your skin feeling soft and smooth. There is also a funky little picture of a mango tree branch as a backdrop, giving the definite impression that you're about to experience something fruity!
The lid is easy to screw off with a couple of quick twists and as soon as it's off you're hit with the distinct aroma of ripe mangoes, almost as if you've just cut into one of the juicy treats! It's a slightly creamier fragrance than an actual mango fruit, but it is still very true to life, surprisingly so, I thought. The butter itself is a creamy pale peachy colour and fills the tub right to the rim which is always appreciated. Nothing is more annoying than spending money (not that I did in this case, but certainly have done in the past) on something new to find it's only half full!
When I first used this body butter I was quite surprised to find it wasn't actually like butter! I know it will sound daft, but as they're called body butters I suppose I was expecting it to be more like a stick of butter consistency, whereas this one is definitely more like body margarine! Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about the consistency, I think it's a nice light, creamy, silky lotion, I was just expecting something more solid.
I decided to use it on the problem areas of my skin (generally my ankles, heels, elbows and, at this time of year, knees and shins) as I prefer a lighter spray for the rest of my body, not really suffering from dryness or anything for the most part. I found it a very easy cream to massage into my skin, feeling very silky and absorbing quite quickly. It left a definite fragrance on my skin which lasted for a good couple of hours and my skin felt immediately softer.
I've now been using this body butter on the drier areas of my skin for a couple of weeks and it has lasted really well. I've used maybe a quarter of the tub, so at that rate I would estimate a full size 200ml tub would last around 6 months for me which, especially if bought on the offer, would be quite good value for money. I can definitely notice the difference in my skin, especially on the backs of my ankles, which suffer a lot at this time of year. The skin isn't nearly so dry or flakey and it feels a lot more supple.
Now comes the hard part. Overall, I've been impressed with my first foray into body butters (there are two others in my gift bag too!) and the effects that it has had on my dry skin. However! I don't think it works any more magic than my usual more intensive body lotion (Aveeno) and for me, the smell is just too much for me to slather it all over my body. Personally I prefer body lotions/shower gels/face creams etc to smell fresh and clean rather than fruity, but this is just a personal taste. So, although I do agree with its soft and smooth claim, for me it's not worth putting up with the smell, which lasts so long it ends up making me feel slightly sick.
I know a lot of people do like their toiletries and cosmetics to have that fruity fragrance so if you're one of them, then I would recommend this cream. It certainly lives up to its claims. Unfortunately I can't see me finishing the pot of this one though, so I'll be nudging it towards the bin and pulling my next goody from the gift bag to see what that's like. So, for me, this has to have a 3 star rating. Whilst I can't fault it as a moisturiser, it's not often that I won't finish a product so it's been a waste of money
Summary: A good body butter which does what it says on the tin, but I'm put off by the smell
