Early last year I bought a bottle of Burt's Bees body lotion from Debenhams, simply to make my order up to a high enough amount to get bonus Beauty Card points. Recently, I've finally got around to using it.
Burt's Bees is a company that I have a bit of experience with, though not as much as with Lush or Body Shop products. As the name suggests, the company makes products designed around ingredients that come from bees, such as beeswax and honey. For this reason, the range is not suitable for vegans, but it is aimed at those who prefer more 'natural' skin and body care. Products are harvested in such a way that they do not damage or harm the bees. The company uses as many natural ingredients in its products as possible. They also try not to use potentially harmful ingredients, and you won't find any sulfates, parabens, phthalates or petrochemicals in their products. Like their other products, this body lotion carries the BUAV bunny logo certifying that it has not been tested on animals.
This Honey & Orange Wax body lotion comes in a narrow, tall yellow bottle with a white and yellow label bearing a picture of a beehive. You get 235ml of product in the bottle. It has a white flip-top lid for ease of use and contains moisturising honey, vitamin-rich orange wax, and sunflower seed and coconut oil.
I'm a bit funny when it comes to honey scents and I wasn't too keen on the scent of this lotion. It has a slightly sickly honey-based smell which grew cloying very quickly. Unfortunately the smell of the lotion lasts on the skin for a good few hours so I had to put up with it for a while, or else drown myself in perfume.
Texture-wise, the lotion isn't particularly thick but it has a rather unpleasant waxy texture, which became particularly apparent when I applied it to my skin. It felt as though there was a film of something on my skin. Luckily this feeling wore off as the day wore on.
As a positive, the lotion did moisturise my skin pretty well for the entire day and it didn't feel greasy. Mind, I think I would have preferred greasy to waxy!
At first the lotion was easy to get out of the bottle, particularly as it isn't very thick, but the bottle is extremely tough and as time went on I found myself making my hand ache trying to squeeze some out! I couldn't get it all out of the bottom, but to be honest I can't say I was that bothered.
This lotion does work well and would be ideal for someone who wants an animal-friendly product free of supposedly nasty chemicals. Personally however, it's not something I would purchase again. The waxy texture and sickly cloying smell really put me off.
On investigation, it seems that Burt's Bees have now discontinued this lotion and it can't be obtained any more. I can't say I'm all that disappointed, however I would consider trying another Burt's Bees body lotion in the future (just not one containing wax!).
Burt's Bees Thoroughly Therapeutic Honey and Orange Wax Body Lotion was given to me by my daughter for xmas and i have been using it ever since as i love the smell and the effects it has on my skin.
Package: the lotion comes in a 6" high bottle made of orange plastic with a white flip-top cap. It is nice and colourful and attractive to the eye. It gives the description, "This naturally therapeutic lotion combines Honey, a natural humectant, and vitamin-rich Orange Wax to moisturise, and rebalance dry, overworked skin. Enriched with Rosemary extract and soothing Aloe to heal, this formula provides daily therapy for dry, irritated skin. Long-lasting, therapeutic moisture for naturally soft, smooth and healthy skin". The plastic the bottle is made from comes from 90% post-consumer recycled material.
Contents: This product does exactly what it says on the bottle, the cream is rich to the touch, creamy and thick and it goes onto your skin with a waxy feel that rubs well into the skin leaving it so soft and smooth to the touch. The smell is quite strong so may not be to everyone's taste but i love the sweet honey scent with a hint of orange and it lingers on your skin for many hours later.
Opinion: I love this body lotion, the smell and the way it leaves my skin feeling soft and smooth and and fresh for many hours. I would deffinatley buy it myself when this is finished. The only downside at all to this product is that the plastic is quite a tough plastic and is therefore difficult to squeeze to get the lotion out of the bottle. However to combat that i just store the bottle upside-down and let the contents settle into the cap.
Cost: I am afraid i cannot comment on the cost as it was a gift so i don't know, but i have seen it on Amazon.co.uk for £10.00 for a bottle of 8 fl oz, which i think is reasonable considering how long it lasts.......i had it for xmas and am only just one third of the way through the bottle.
Conclusion: All in all this is a lovely product and i would be happy to buy it again!
