Advantages: Great bottles, smells

Disadvantages: None

Up until this Christmas I hadn't even heard of Neal's Yard Remedies. Then, I received quite a few of their products as gifts and now am a fan of the company and its products.

Neal's Yard Remedies is a British chain of cosmetics stores. Its main aim or focus should I say is on natural remedies and getting away from the synthetic chemical approach to beauty and skincare that most other companies out there seem to have. They say on their website that their vision was to bring the expertise of the apothecary and a holistic approach to health and beauty to local people and their communities.

They actually have the following statement on their website, "What matters to us are people, their health and their happiness. We're obsessed with discovering and delivering natural ways to improve health and well-being and delivering outstanding natural and organic skin and body care products. We also believe passionately that our environment is of vital importance, both in its own right, and as the source of many of the plants and herbs vital to our wellbeing. That's why we actively support and promote organic,"

The first Neal's Yard Remedies shop actually opened as far back as 1981. It was opened in a corner of Neal's Yard in Covent Garden, London, hence the name. The founder, Romy Fraser. was interested in alternative medicine and wanted to bring together all the varying natural remedies available in one shop.

Going into one of their shops your met with a interesting smell of lots of weird and wonderful fragrances, it's a bit like stepping back in time into a proper chemist store with lots of lotions and potions. It has such a great look to it and to me, the packaging and the bottles are part of the product as well. The store actually attest to this as well. They say that way back in 1617 when apothecaries were the fountain of all knowledge when it came to herbal products, the distinctive features of their trade were the blue bottles filled with herbs and potions. They wanted to bring that kind of look back into their stores which is why now, a lot of their products are sold in gorgeous looking blue bottles.

The Citrus Hand wash itself comes in a gorgeous dark blue glass bottle. It has a black plastic pump action at the top in order to get out the hand wash. The wash is said to cleanse and freshen all skin types but is especially good to keep in the kitchen due to the fact that it can combat food smells such as garlic and onion on the hands. I have mine in the kitchen because I do hate it when I smell like onions the day after I have cut them and I have to say that this hand wash does take away the lingering smell.

The smell of the lotion to me is very lemony. However, it does have other citrus ingredients in it. Essential oil of anti-sceptic lemon is combined with conditioning extract of ho leaf, sweet orange and grapefruit oils. It definitely lingers on your hands after you have used the wash. The hand wash itself is clear and almost has a serum type consistency to it. It lathers up well and what's nice is that you only need a little bit in order to wash your hands.

You can buy the products in a dedicated Neal's Yard Remedies shop as well as department stores like John Lewis. A 200ml bottle of the Citrus Hand wash costs £9.30.
