For Christmas I received a lovely set containing quite a few Clarins products which I've since been using and quite enjoying doing so. There were a number of different skin care products included one being this HydraQuench Cream Gel.
My set contained a miniature version of the cream so my 15ml comes in a blue plastic tube as opposed to the full sized version which comes in a circular blue pot and holds 50ml of cream costing £33.50 from the likes of Boots and most stores selling premium beauty products. Obviously this can also be purchased from the Clarins website too.
The cream is for normal to combination skin so I wasn't too sure how I was going to get on this as I have quite sensitive and dry skin, despite this I decided to test it out anyway. Clarins claim this has an 'immediate cooling effect on contact with the skin' and 'tightens pores and assures a long-lasting matte appearance.' In theory, this sounded like quite a nice cream and, given how much a 50ml pot of this costs I was expecting it do rather a lot!
The cream is white and has a thin gel like consistency although isn't too watery. It has a slight sweet and musky scent to it which is unusual for a face cream but still quite pleasant, I'd quite like this scent in perfume form actually!
This spreads across the skin really nicely and I really only need to use a pea sized blob to cover my face and neck as a small amount goes such a long way, exactly what you need when a pot costs you more than £30! It's non-oily or greasy and dries pretty much instantly so you don't have to wait around for ages before applying any make-up over the top. The application is actually really nice, the results are nothing much to write home about though.
Firstly, that 'immediate cooling effect' doesn't seem to exist, I really can't say I've experienced anything of the sort in the time I've been applying this. Secondly, it does leave my face quite shiny. Nothing too major but I certainly don't feel I get a matte look after applying this cream although I can forgive that as it may be more to do with my skin type being different to the one this product is aimed at.
The cream is really light and moisturising though and does leave my skin feeling really soft and supple. I wouldn't use this a night cream as I prefer something heavier which just gives my skin that extra moisture boost whilst I'm asleep but I'm happy to use this in the morning as a day cream. I would say the moisturising effects last all day but it doesn't really have any long term effects beyond that. I have used some similar products which have really improved the overall condition of my skin with regular use but this one hasn't done anything of the sort.
If this cream was about £25 cheaper I'd happily repurchase and continue to use as it's not bad and for a good price it'd be a much better product. Whilst I do have mostly positive opinions on this cream I really don't find that it has anything spectacular about it and that price tag really does seem to just be paying for the name rather than the quality of the product.
The good news is that I've experienced no reaction whilst using this despite suffering from very sensitive skin. This is a product I'd be happy to use again if I could get my hands on it for free again or at least, at a much lower price. I simply do not think £33.50 for 50ml of this is justified at all though and for that reason, will not be repurchasing.
This product has now been replaced by the HydraQuench Cream Gel which works in exactly the same way.
Pros: I have struggled with my skin for years and really love Clarins for its combination range as it provides the right amount of moisture and is kind to sensitive skin. The lightweight formula blends well and dries quickly so you can apply your make up soon after. All types of foundation sit well on this formula and I've found that my make up looks much better when I use this product.
Cons: Like most moisturisers, this is quite pricey and I find that I have to purchase a new one every month, even if I apply the smallest amount to my skin.
Overall, this is a fabulous product and a must have for combination skin. I would highly recommend using this product with the pure melt cleanse gel as part of your daily skincare routine.
