Clinique Deep Comfort Body Butter
Advantages: Smells absolutely gorgeous, helped with a patch of eczema
Disadvantages: An odd texture which makes it very hard to successfully rub in
This was another freebie I was given by a friend of a friend who works on one of the many Clinique counters in Birmingham, I was actually given a hand full of the small 25ml sample tubes as well as one part used tub.
I've never been much of a fan of Clinique's skincare items (despite liking their make-up) but I DO like most body butters I've tried so thought this would be a good way to try something a bit more premium than the Body Shop. Not that I'm dissing the Body Shop here, I actually love a lot of their stuff, but that's somewhere where I can actually afford to shop regularly - the Clinique counter isn't. Unless I want Mark to move out in protest. Hang on a minute, Clinique counter here I come!
This is a very thick body butter, the consistency is actually very similar to butters from the Body Shop only not quite so greasy feeling. I loved the first touch of this on my fingertips as I remember it felt so luxurious, unfortunately when I came to apply it to my body I wasn't quite as thrilled. You see, while the consistency is fab, the texture isn't. It's very hard to spread lightly on my skin (as recommended by Clinique) due to the strange thickness of it, I say strange as I can't quite put my finger on the problem but really I think it's just that this butter is a combination of being too thick and not creamy enough.
After several false starts I found the best way to apply the butter is to warm it up slightly in your hands for a minute before rubbing it on your skin. This still doesn't give it the correct texture but does make life slightly easier. I much prefer something creamier that will glide across my skin, but this is so thick that I could actually feel it dragging as I attempted to apply it. After application my skin didn't feel exactly sticky, but I felt like there was an invisible layer of *something* there which didn't feel good to me at all. Applying this butter in the morning is a definite no-no (as I discovered after feeling icky all day) and even if you put it on in the evening before bed you might not be able to sleep for the strange feeling on your skin.
This butter is very nourishing though, which goes some way to explaining the very rich consistency of it. I have had an odd patch of localised eczema come up on one of my shins recently, none of the medicated lotions I tried would even touch it but within four days of slathering this butter on the affected area it has all but disappeared. After showering the revolting feeling body butter off my skin always feels beautifully soft and there's a 'plumpness' about it which makes it look extremely healthy. It's much better than the Body Shop butters in this respect, but those are generally nicer to use.
All that's left for me to say really is that this butter smells absolutely gorgeous. It has a definite shea butter aroma and reminds me slightly of a watered down Palmer's Cocoa Butter in fragrance. The smell lingers on my skin for longer than you'd think considering the fact that it's quite subtle while still in the tube/pot and I find it a very soothing fragrance, much more so than the fruity and candy perfumes which body butters usually have.
£20-ish from Clinique counters, or a little cheaper if bought online.
Summary: An effective body butter, if you can get over the awful application process!
