Advantages: Gets teeth really clean

Disadvantages: None

I picked this stuff up on a whim out shopping as I was having problems with the supermarket's own brand I was using. I'm not usually bothered about brands and happy to grab whatever's cheapest and/or most convenient, but recently my teeth have permanently felt as though they needed brushing. I wondered whether it was because I live in a really hard water area, but my dentist suggested switching toothpaste.

Colgate Max Fresh Col Mint is easy to identify on the shop shelf as it comes in a shiny, bright blue box with the usual red and white Colgate logo. Faced with a huge array of all-singing, all-dancing products I just picked this because the colour stood out. It also comes in Clean Mint (green box) and as a pump version.

According to the box it is the first ever toothpaste to contain 'cooling crystals' that dissolve in the mouth during brushing and promise a new dimension of freshness for your gob by killing of the nasties that cause bad breath. Of course, it also cleans the teeth and prevents cavities.

The toothpaste is a bright blue gel with pale blue 'crystals' that look like little pieces of those breath mints that you dissolve on your tongue. I found it really pleasant to use. I was expecting it to be really powerfully minty, but it's a lot milder than the name 'Max Fresh' would suggest and so doesn't take a layer of skin off your tongue or make your eyes water like some stronger toothpastes. I don't feel that the cooling crystals made much difference - to be honest they seem like a gimmick and I couldn't feel or taste them. My mouth felt as fresh as it does when I've used any other toothpaste. The real difference, though, was how squeaky clean my teeth felt after cleaning - as though I'd just had a scale and polish (minus the discomfort!). The feeling lasted until the next time I brushed them as well.

At £1.80 this toothpaste is not at the cheapest end of the scale but won't break the bank either. I'm more than happy to pay for this as it's a great product and I'll definitely be using it again.

Summary: A great, fresh toothpaste that works
