The head of the brush is raised a little higher, a mm or so above the rest of the brush itself, I believe that this is so the bristles can get into the nooks and crannies of our teeth as it were. I am a bit funny when it comes to buying a toothbrush as I have to be careful of my gums, some brushes have heads that are too big and irritate me without me knowing and I bleed. However this toothbrush was perfect for me.
