A lovely smell, but no real skincare benefits, and doesn't justify the price tag

This was a valentines gift from my boyfriend for Valentines day. I'm almost certain he was trying to tell me something, as that was something of a stressful period for me, and grumpy cow would be putting it mildly. This wasn't a brand I'd heard of before, but apparently they've been around since 1998 since they opened up a spa in an old cowshed, hence the brand name and the cow theme in product names. They say their products take inspiration from an English country garden, and they make all their products in the UK with sustainable ingredients. They don't test on animals, and barring a little beeswax and honey, avoid animal ingredients in their products. Anyway, onto my uplifting body lotion! As with any body lotion, using it is easy, just apply liberally over your skin. The packaging does advise a skin test first due to the high level of essential oils, and also advises seeking advice before using if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Being neither of these things, I set to smearing. The smell of the body lotion is fresh and citrusy. It's quite a zingy sort of a smell, one that is quite energising and wakes you up a little. There is definitely grapefruit in the smell with it's sharp bitter tartness, but also something sweeter and juicier. The packaging advises that it contains red mandarin, which could certainly be the source of that lighter fresher smell. It also advises that the product contains petitgrain - I have no idea what that is or what it should smell like, but there were lots of other smells under the citrus. Sandalwood certainly, but also some warm spice smells. It's not just citrus, it's exotic citrus, and I actually think it's quite a unisex scent, rather than an overly masculine one. The consistency of the lotion is neither too thick nor too thin. It spreads easily over the skin, with a ltitle going a long way, and absorbs easily. My skin feels lovely immediately after using - softer and smoother- although I do find this effect doesn't last terribly long. What does last a long time is the scent- I could smell it on myself right through from using it in the morning until around teatime, so I do think the use of quality essential oils rather than artificial scents proves worthwhile here. I can't really say that I felt uplifted either - certainly I was more awake, but I wasn't any less grumpy. I was rather shocked when researching this for reviewing purposes to see that the price for this is £18 for a 300ml bottle. That seems astronomical in my mind for a bath product - if I were going to pay that, I'd want, at the very least, an attractive glass bottle I can keep and reuse rather than a plastic one! My boyfriend did confess however that he only paid a tenner for mine in TK Maxx, which I suppose I can grudgingly accept as a little more reasonable for a product containing expensive essential oils, though I certainly wouldn't pay it myself, especially as, although the scent lasted a long time, it didn't have any lasting beneficial effects on my skin. Overall, although I really do like the scent (available as a 10ml roll on, costing £18) I don't feel that it offers me much in terms of skincare benefits, and I certainly don't feel the £18 price tag is justified. It was a lovely gift, but not something I would ever buy for myself with that price tag, hence my rating of three stars.

      Grumpy Cow? who me?

I always receive a tonne of gorgeous fragranced gifts at Christmas, and this year was no exception. One of the gifts that I received was this Cowshed Grumpy Cow Uplifting Body Lotion. I received it as part of a gorgeous gift from three very close friends, that consisted of three Cowshed Grumpy Cow products; Grumpy Cow Uplifting Body Lotion, Grumpy Cow Uplifting Bath & Shower Gel and Grumpy Cow Uplifting Bath & Body Oil. Cowshed products are not especially cheap, the Grumpy Cow body products range in price from £16.00 to £20.00, but they are definitely indulgent and luxury products. They make a gorgeous gift for someone, or a luxurious treat for yourself. The Grumpy Cow Uplifting Body Lotion retails for £18.00, and comes in a 300ml bottle. The Grumpy Cow Uplifting Body Lotion is white in colour, and although it's a lotion it's actually quite a thick substantial lotion. It massages into my skin easily though and it completely disappears and sinks into my skin leaving no greasy residue or stickyness behind at all, it just seems to melt into my skin. This leaves my skin feeling really soft and hydrated, and superbly moisturised. It feels like a very intensely moisturising lotion, and my skin feels absolutely superb after using this. I use this all over my body, and I don't need to use much of it as a little really does go a long way. Although I love the Grumpy Cow Uplifting Body Lotion for its superb moisturising properties alone, I especially love it for the absolutely divine fragrance. Cowshed state that this is ''a citrus blend that leaves you feeling energised with essential oils of red mandarin, petitgrain and grapefruit. Red mandarin invigorates the senses whilst petitgrain purifies the mind.'' I would say that this is an accurate description, this does indeed have a very strong citrussy fragrance. I can't say that I can pinpoint the mandarin or the grapefruit exactly, and I have no idea what petitgrain smells like anyway! But I can say that it's a divine sweet and yet somehow sharp citrussy fragrance, and that it's a really uplifting and refreshing fragrance. For me this is definitely a morning fragrance, and it really does seem to wake me up and to actually put me in a much better mood in the mornings. I'm actually a real grumpy cow in the mornings, and I suspect that's why my friends chose the Grumpy Cow products for me! I always layer the Grumpy Cow products, and so I always use the body lotion with the shower gel, and sometimes even with the oil as well. I find that because the fragrance in these is so intense if I layer two or especially three of the products then I don't actually need to use any perfume as well. I can catch the divine citrus fragrance wafting off my skin for the majority of the day. Even late in the evening when the fragrance has mainly worn off I can still smell it if I actually sniff my skin. I would say that because the fragrance is so intense in these then you may find that it will clash or overpower your perfume, and so maybe it's best to just use the Grumpy Cow products alone as I do. I thought that this was a gorgeous Christmas gift, and I did actually love the 'Grumpy Cow' connotations! I would definitely repurchase this again for myself in the future, and I'll also keep it in mind for a birthday gift for another 'Grumpy Cow' that I know!
