Advantages: Freshens breath, nice taste, gets rid of "bits"

Disadvantages: Slightly more expensive than the competition

It's been said I am something of an advertisers dream, there only has to be a new item for consumption with a slight gimmick attached or some originality about it and that product will inevitably end up in my shopping trolley. Imagine my joy then, when I noticed Dentyl PH Mouthwash on special offer on a recent trip to ASDA. Here was a product that used a subtle blend of witchcraft and wizardry to deliver a bottle of mouthwash, somehow divided into two separate coloured potions, one floating atop the other! As someone who has worked in bars in the past, and tried to mix many a cocktail, I can tell you that this mesmerizing layering of liquids is a skill second only to teleportation for wow factor. I stealthy deposited a couple of bottles of this intriguing looking concoction into my trolley for closer examination at home.
At the time of writing there are five varieties of Dentyl PH mouthwash available, but for some reason most supermarkets and chemists only carry the three most popular which seem to be Icy-fresh mint, Icy-fresh cherry and mouthrinse clove. As someone who thinks cloves should be a flavour present in apple pies and nothing else, and the fact that the cherry varieties vivid pink hue would clash with my bathroom it was the good old mint flavour that I chose as my ally in matters of oral health. It is also worthy of note that the cherry and mint varieties are about a pound dearer than the other two, or at least they were when I purchased them. I'm not sure why this particular pricing discrepancy, as they all seem to do the same thing, just with a slightly different flavour.

Nothing about the label on the bottle betrays the marvellous elixir within, indeed a good long look at the ingredients failed to reveal a single eye of newt or toe of frog, unless these ingredients have the chemical name Limonene or Sodium fluoride, which I somehow doubt. There are also no prerequisites to using the mouthwash, i.e. you don't have to travel to work on a broomstick or have a black cat. So far so good then! All joking aside there are a couple of factors worthy of mention. Firstly, the mouthwash is alcohol free, which means that the mouth feels less dry after use, and the presence of more saliva keeps your breathe fresher for longer. It also contains fluoride, which is widely thought to strengthen teeth and gums. So far so good then, time to try some and set my teeth on a one way journey of healthiness.
There are instructions to be observed when using Dentyl mouthwash; namely a good old shake of the bottle to turn the two different liquids within into one murky amalgam. You then chug half a cap and set about swishing, swashing and gargling like a demon. And then the clever bit - expelling the mouthful of spent mouthwash delivers what can only be described as a bright blue mess in your sink! Tendrils and debris dribble lazily towards the plughole, lumps and bits of goodness knows what all extracted from your mouth, such is the result you wonder how you ever had room in your maw before. In reality these bits and pieces are just small particles of food or bacterial build up and will almost certainly have been expelled when using other mouthwashes, but the visible reassurance that the mouthwash is doing some good is certainly an interesting concept. I am guessing that kids will particularly like this visual treat of detritus staring back at them from the sink, and anything that encourages youngsters to brush teeth, use mouthwash and generally care about oral health cannot be a bad thing in my mind.

For me, Dentyl does feel a little gimmicky when you see the bits in the sink, but my mouth did feel noticeably cleaner after use and nobody passed out from my halitosis so the breath freshening claims are probably valid. It's about £1 more expensive than similar products from Listerine or Colgate, but if you can grab a couple of bottles on special offer that price tumbles. Roughly speaking a 500ml bottle lasts me about three weeks when using a capful a day over two applications. The biggest plus mark from me though was when my Dentist told me I had good oral hygiene on a visit last month, anything that keeps the dental drill and the accompanying financial pain at bay is a winner in my eyes. Four stars out of five from me.
