Advantages: it works

Disadvantages: it is a scam

Tragedy has struck me. I am a social pariah. My body, no longer a temple, has become more of a sixties tenement building. It has started to wrinkle and crack around the edges, moss seems to be growing along many seams and there are places that have become a little less salubrious than I remember they should be.

But in all my years on this earth, I never realised that an important part of my body to keep smooth and wrinkle free was my armpit. I have to admit it I have wrinkly armpits. Not that this seemed to matter until about 6 months ago. Suddenly I discovered that in advertising circles I could regain my social status by applying moisturising cream to my armpits.

I am sorry, but I cannot see how this is of major importance when choosing a deodorant. I have done a few things in my life, I have danced, I have been with the odd sexual partner, I have even done a little modelling. Yes modelling, you know Chinos from catalogue companies and that sort of thing. I have never, ever felt the need to have svelte armpits though. Oh, I know the photographer was not keen for me to get my kit off, but I am convinced this was not because he feared that the world would notice my previously unmoisturised armpits.

Dove now has produced a deodorant that sells itself as an armpit saviour.

The deodorant is pleasant enough. I have had to borrow my wife's in recent weeks. It has an agreeable odour; it works well as a deodorant, even in my insalubrious corners, and it leaves no sticky residues. But at £1.75 it is not cheap. So why does it cost more than all the other brands? Well it contains aqueous cream, a very cheap moisturising cream. This is then marketed very heavily as a must have accessory for your armpit. Now the extra cost does not go into the quarter moisturising cream content. It must, therefore, go towards paying the advertising executive, who saw the opportunity to take ordinary old, unglamorous, deodorant and remarket it as a necess
ary moisturiser for your armpit.

Hold on. Has the world gone mad? This is your armpit; you know the hairy old smelly bit that never really gets to see the light of day where your arm meets your body. Why have we managed to get along without moisturising it for all these centuries? Do we need this?

Now there are a few of you who shave this area. Apparently Dove does not sting when you apply it after a shave. Well, blow me; I cannot really remember a world where thousands of people spent valuable minutes leaping around the bathroom because their armpits were stinging.

I feel that this is a totally artificial market. It has been created to sell yet another deodorant. It is a scam and I am not pleased to say that it has worked. Dove has become a major player in the deodorant market. This is a triumph of advertising and we are buying it, hook line and, as yet not moisturised, sinker.

I know many of you love the stuff, but think about it, this is ordinary deodorant. It's job is to stop your armpit from smelling. Sure it works. But do your armpits need to be as smooth as a baby's bottom as well? I suspect that if Dove deodorant became unavailable you would all manage somehow. This is a luxury item and it costs more. Fair enough but don't justify it with the moisturising thing. That is a load of crock.

I am sorry if this opinion has offended converts. Please bear with me though. I do appreciate you taking the time to read this. I hope you may have had a little think about the product and accept that I feel this is a case of "spin" overwhelming "substance". Your armpits were fine before this stuff was ever invented.

Iprefer achearer brand that stops me ponging as for moisturising well at my age it's toooo late to worry now but i bet it would be cheaper if you really wanted smooth pits to use a cheap moisturiser as well as for stinging pits dont shave immiediately before you deodorise leave it for a short while well done some one who can see through the advertisers hype
