Advantages: moisturises, smells lovely
Disadvantages: expensive, no additional firming properties noticeable over and above using Dove Gel - Cream alone
The other day I needed to replace my shower gel and rushed into Boots to see what was on offer. My usual products were all at full price, but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the Dove range was on "buy one get one free" that week. The bottle that immediately jumped into my line of sight was the "Body Firm - Firming Body Wash". I had both used the Dove Firming Lotion and the Dove Firming Gel-Cream from this range before and was especially impressed with the gel-cream. In fact, I use the gel-cream on a daily basis.
***The product***
This product comes in a white, long and oval stand-up bottle with a pop-up cap. It contains 250 ml of whitish-green body wash. Other colours on the bottle are gold and green. On the front of the bottle you will see the Dove logo in blue and a gold dove right beneath. The product is labelled "Body Firm - Firming Body Wash".
Underneath the product name you are told that the lotion contains active moisturising cream, seaweed-extract and ceramides. The seaweed extract is apparently known for its firming properties and is supposed to increase the skin's elasticity, while the ceramides are supposed to tighten the skin's structure. The moisturising cream is supposed to increase the skin's moisture levels.
At the top of the bottle you will often find a red sticker labelled "Thalasso-Formula" - and on the back of the bottle you are told that the body wash forms part of the Thalasso Spa Theraphy.
What is Thalasso Spa Theraphy? For those who have not read my reviews on the other products in this range, earlier research told me that "Thalassa" is the greek word for "sea". The theraphy is a method of preventative and curative treatment which uses the therapeutic virtues of seawater and seaweed to oxygenate, tone, moisturize and revitalize the body and the skin.
The product promises to leave your skin feeling noticeably firmer and smoother after use. It also recommends to follow-up your shower experience by massaging Dove Firming Lotion all over your body and Dove Firming Gel-Cream on your problem areas, such as your thighs.
***My experience***
I first opened the bottle and smelled the product. Like the gel-cream, it smelled fresh and flowery, simple and pleasant. It is difficult to describe the smell accurately, but besides the soapy undertone, I would most closely liken it to magnolia and chamomille.
While showering, I squeezed a chestnut-sized amount of the product onto my hands and started dispersing it onto my arms. It felt smooth and pleasant on my skin and was easily rubbed all over my body without leaving any film on my skin afterwards. I instantly noticed the lack of lather when using the product - it simply leaves a few tiny bubbles on the skin.
Unlike my usual shower gels, I did find that the product disappeared from the skin quite quickly and that I had to dispense quite a bit of body wash to get my entire body cleansed. This urge to use more and more product probably stems from the fact that it does not lather up nicely and that it simply feels so addictively smooth and silky on your skin when you apply it. I probably used 1/8 of the bottle in one wash, which is not exactly economical, if you consider that you would have to buy a bottle a week in order to keep clean!
When I came out of the shower, I my skin tingled and felt extremely fresh. In addition, I could feel the effects of the moisturising cream, as my skin was definitely a lot smoother than usual. My skin was softly scented, as scent that was still detectable after several hours.
I have been using this product for 2-3 weeks now, and I can definitely say that it has superb moisturising properties, as do all Dove showergels and lotions. In combination with the gel-cream, I can definitely say that my skin's condition has improved. However, I am failing to notice any additional firming properties over and above the ones that I have noticed from simply using the Dove Gel-Cream on its own.
***Price and availability***
Ordinarily, this a bottle of 250 ml will set you back £2.49 at Boots. I have also seen this product at Superdrug, Morrisons and Sainsbury's.
***The verdict***
I quite like this body wash, but I am not exactly overwhelmed by it. It smells nice and I would definitely recommend it to people who suffer from dry skin, but there are better and cheaper showergels out there that I would prefer to this one. I would not buy it at full price in the future, but would definitely get it again if I can find a 2 for 1 offer.
