Advantages: Firms skin, reduces celluite appearance, moisturises
Disadvantages: Price - but it is worth it !
***Background***
Most women over 25 that I know have one huge concern about their bodies: Celluite! And many of these women spend a lot of money on trying out all these fancy products that promise to combat this horrible appearance in our problem areas. Not me. I had long given up that quest, mostly due to a very constrained budget. Even though I have had celluite since I have been about 20 (mostly due to losing and gaining larger amounts of weight at various stages in my life), I never believed that a product could actually help me with this problem.
I also have tremendously dry skin. My legs flake, my hands dry out, it is really quite annoying. I am therefore always on the lookout for a new moisturiser. Dove seemed highly recommended on Ciao, and I tried a few decent ones from their range. But I was not impressed with any single one of them.
Then I walked into the beauty section of my Sainsbury's during our weekly grocery shop and spotted a 2 for 1 deal. I cannot ever bypass a good 2 for 1 deal. This time it was this: Dove Intensive Body Firming Gel-Cream. It just had to be bought!!!
***The product***
This product comes in a stand-up white tube with blue, red, black and green writing on it and contains 200ml of light blue gel. On the top right corner of the bottle you will see a red circle which says "NEW - Thalasso-Formula" .
Whatever that means, I just know that you should be careful when picking up a bottle, as Dove produces a very similar product, a body moisturiser, rather than a firming gel. So maybe this will help you identify the bottle more easily.
The bottle is very convenient - as it is a stand-up tube, the gel will easily go to the bottom and easily come out: No need for hours and hours of squeezing to obtain the last few drops of product.
On the front of the bottle you are told that this is an "intensive firming gel-cream" containing seaweed extract and elastin-peptides.
When you turn over the bottle, you are told that celluite usually first shows on typical problem areas, such as thighs, stomach and bottom. Like you did not know that?
Anyway, this gel cream claims to be a targeted intensive treatment for these problem areas. Apparently tests have proven the following:
1. After 1 week of usage, the skin around the problem area is significantly firmer
2. After 3 weeks of usage, the appearance of celluite is noticeably reduced.
How does it do that? Well, apparently the seaweed-extract is a substance known for stimulating cell metabolism. In addition, the elastin-peptides help increase the skin's firmness. Both substances are also meant to increase the skin's elasticity.
All you need to do is massage this gel into the skin with circular motions, until it is totally absorbed!
***My experience***
Well, let me start by saying that I did not believe any of these miraculous claims when I bought the product. I needed a moisturiser and it was a good deal, that was about it.
The first time I used the gel I has just showered and shaved. I opened my bottle of firming gel and took a sniff. It smelled fresh and flowery, simple and pleasant.
I then squeezed out a pea-sized amount of the product onto the palm of my hands. I was instantly surprised at how smooth it felt. I started to use it on my calves (as I did not intend to use it as a celluite fighter, but a moisturiser). It felt very pleasant when I rubbed it in, smooth and silky. It immediately absorbed into my skin. But even better than that: a pea-sized amount was definitely enough for each of my calves.
I then also used it on my thighs, stomach and arms and again was surprised at the quick absorption and the little amount I had to use.
My boyfriend commented on the smell immediately - he simply loves it. He thinks it smells very clean and fresh.
I went on using this product for about 4-5 times a week for the next two weeks, and I definitely noticed that my skin's condition had improved tremendously. It did not flake anymore, it was nice and moist. But in addition to that, I also saw the other changes. My skin did look and feel a lot firmer on the areas that I applied the gel to. I thought it was all in my mind at first, but 5 weeks later, I still feel and see the improvement.
The thing I was most sceptical about was the effect this product claimed to have on celluite. All the more was I surprised when I noticed a reduction in its appearance this weekend. So it was after 5 weeks of usage that I saw a difference, not after 3 weeks as claimed on the bottle. But there is still a visible difference! Don't get me wrong, I still have celluite and I probably always will have celluite, but my skin looks a lot healthier these days.
It had a tremendously great effect on my usually dry hands as well - since I have been using this firming gel, I had no need to apply any additional handcream. The simple task of rubbing the gel into my 'problem areas' seems to be enough to combat the dry hands issue.
***Other uses***
As someone I know once accidentally used a Dove moisturiser as eye make-up remover, I decided to give that a go. And like other Dove products, it actually does work. So if you have forgotten your normal eye make-up remover - help is at hand.
This weekend a woman at my gym had forgotten her facial moisturiser and was so cheeky to ask me if I had any. Well, I did not, but I pointed towards my bottle of firming gel, and she used it as a facial moisturiser. No complaints there, so there is another good use. Wonder if it reduces wrinkles as well?
A bottle of this gel, if applied 4-5 times a week, will last about 3 weeks.
***Price and availability***
A tube with 200 ml of gel will set you back £5.99. I have seen this product in supermarkets (Sainsbury's), Superdrug and Boots.
***My verdict***
As you can see from the above review, I would most definitely recommend this product to anyone. I love it - and I would even buy it at full price.

Richada - 17.10.05 This is my wife's favourite and she buys it in a local Savers shop for around £3. We make a point of not shopping in places like Boots. They are overcharging on most products. A very good review. Richard. |
