Aside from the smell, this is tan-tastic! (Dove Summer Glow Body Lotion)

Advantages: Does the job!

Disadvantages: Like all fake tans, they're tricky to apply well

I'm a fair, redhead and have never wanted a tan, until recently. People like Nicola from Girls Aloud have shown pale can be extremely pretty, but only if your skin is in great condition. I don't put very much weight on at my top half (it all goes to the booty!) so my chest is fair, and this doesn't look as good when it's pale. A few photos showed I was too chalky throughout the day and I had an urge to have a lighter skin tone. I have a great MAC foundation for nights out that's a shade lighter than my skin, and wanted my body to match.

My sister works in Superdrug and recommended the Dove Summer Glow Body Lotion for a gradual tan. I was tempted to buy the medium-dark formula because I hate waiting for things but went with the fair formula. It was reduced to £1!! Amazing value, considering the original Johnsons one was around £6-7.

The lotion is a light creamy, yellow colour and does have a strange smell which definitely lingers. It's a bit like butter or biscuits! Not so nice...

I first put moisturiser on after a shower, then waited about half an hour and applied the lotion. It spreads well but doesn't sink in very fast, so you stay greasy for a while.

I didn't notice any difference at first, so have been applying it in the same way for the past weeks nearly every day. Then a few days ago, I was talking to my sister and she said, 'Woah, look at your hands!' I have orange hands! Nooo! And elbows!

Blame my bad application I guess, I have been avoiding joints and washing my hands thouroughly afterwards ever since. I thought that, because this was gradual tan, it wouldn't be so apparent or streaky, oops. You can tell my skin is more tanned, but it's more so in certain areas.

Therefore, you have to be very careful how you use this! You do get a large amount in each bottle though, and the packaging is a light gold colour. The lid has a no-spill top, so it remains clean. But if you put it on at night, you will still wake up with the smell!

Summary: Not the greatest gradual tan, though it does the job it offers
