E45 Nourish & Restore Body Lotion
Advantages: Fast absorbed; good value; effective; OK for sensitive skin
Disadvantages: Contains parabens; I wish it was more perfumed
I was asked recently whether having a nut allergy meant that I have to avoid cosmetic and body-care products that contain nut derived ingredients: the answer is yes, though over the years I have come to learn that some brands can be used even if they do contain these ingredients. This is because when highly refined nut oils are used, there is so little of the allergen left in the oil that all but the most serious allergy suffers find that no reaction occurs when the product comes into contact with the skin.
The problem comes when cheaper brands do not use such highly refined oils; a reaction is then more likely. This can be an issue for me when buying body moisturisers because so many of them contain sweet almond oil which is an ingredient that is good for keeping skin supple. E45 is one of the brands I've come to trust when it comes to skin care so I was delighted when Bzz Agent sent me a bottle of the new E45 formulation Nourish & Restore and asked me to try it. It does contain sweet almond oil (among other natural oils) but I had faith in E45 to use highly refined oils which would not pose a problem.
On the negative side I note that the ingredients do contain several parabens and while I can't make any statements about the safety (or not) of such ingredients, there are many people who, until the risk from parabens can be proven one way or the other, prefer to avoid them.
The E45 brand has been around over 50 years and has established itself with a reputation for effective solutions to dry and damaged skin. The brand has always seemed to me to be one you use more to tackle a particular problem than because you enjoy using it: its distinctive branding has a strong medical feel by which I mean that it makes the products look more like something your doctor has suggested you use than something you've spotted on the shelf in Boots and really want to try. The brands new product is E45 Nourish & Restore which is aimed at mature skin though, tactfully, no suggestion is given as to when, exactly, one might need such a product. It contains B3 and natural oils to keep skin supple and moisturised and the company claims that you should be able to see the difference after just three weeks of use.
I'm now 41 and find that compared with many of my friends I still have young looking skin. However, after a prolonged winter I have found that some areas such as my elbows and knees are in need of extra moisturising and with short sleeve weather upon us, I do need an effective solution to those dry elbows.
E45 Nourish & Restore is easy to use and the bottle has been well designed to be held comfortably while dispensing a sensible amount from the bottle. The cream inside is neither too thick nor too runny and there is no danger of squeezing out too much. My mum, who has very bad rheumatoid arthritis in her hands, kindly tested this bottle for me and she had no problems in dispensing the cream.
E45 Nourish & Restore is described as 'lightly fragranced' but I could hardly detect any fragrance at all and what I did pick up wasn't especially appealing as I found it had a slightly 'old' smell; however, once absorbed into the skin there was no scent all. On reflection I would prefer this cream to have some fragrance though that is just personal preference.
The cream is very easily absorbed and I find that I do have to use more of this cream than I would my usual body moisturiser in order to feel that I've given my skin a sufficient 'dose'. That said, after two weeks of use, I can already feel a difference and find that I can use a little less and get the same effect which says to me that my skins is becoming more supple and hydrated (I liken this is watering a plant that has become quite dry and draws all the water in very quickly at first, then more slowly).
E45 claims that your skin will be noticeably 'glowing' after a few weeks of use: maybe I have to wait a bit longer for that. What I can say is that after just a couple of weeks those dry areas do feel much softer and my skin feels generally healthier.
Packaged in the distinctive E45 container with flip top cap Nourish & Restore is an excellent addition to the E45 fold. Although I've found it really useful coming out of the winter, I can see myself using it in the summer as an alternative to a dedicated after-sun product. Look among the E45 products for the one with the wine coloured cap; a number of other skin care brands use a similar colour to denote their range for mature skin which makes this one easy to spot.
At the time of writing E45 Nourish & Restore is on offer at Boots for £2.66 for 250ml (usual price £3.99). A 400ml is priced currently at £3.99 (usually £5.49) and offers even better value. There are cheaper products around but I think this is great value for such a well regarded and reputable brand and for me personally, I have the security that I can use this product without any adverse reaction. So far I have found this product to be effective and easy to use and I recommend it.
