Elle Macpherson Ultimate Moisture Body Butter
Advantages: Moisturises really well, a very nice body butter...
Disadvantages: ... but it smells so strong! Also it's an unusual, very citrusy scent.
Christmas 2009 and my Mum kindly bought me a gift set from Boots containing Elle MacPherson products. I had noticed the range myself in Boots before, but had never given it much thought. For a start I don't even know who Elle MacPherson is (though I'm the worst person ever when it comes to celebrities... in that I don't know who many are at all!) and well, I usually avoid celebrity endorsed products with a barge pole as to be honest, I never imagine them being any good. Despite this I did use a hand cream from the set, and I did like it. Due to a large amount of beauty products I have stashed away, I have only just gotten around to using this very large tub of body butter.
I love using body butters, everyone by now has heard of those Body Shop body butters, and admittedly when I think of a body butter I immediately think of those, but there's are lots of different brands out there producing them these days. I probably would never have used this body butter had it not been given to me in a gift set.
~~ The Range ~~
The Elle MacPherson range can be found in most Boots stores, namely near the FCUK and Sanctuary Spa type products. The range does everything from body washes, to hand creams and even an airbrush tan. Of course the first appeal should be the celebrity name, but the packaging whilst plain, does come across as a posh brand. This also comes across nicely in the price, as this range isn't cheap! Most products are in the £4-£10 mark and this particular body butter usually costs £8.95, although currently reduced to £8.50. Whilst arguably expensive, I must admit you do get a large 475ml tub of body butter, and it's a huge and weighty tub for your money!
~~ The Ultimate Moisture Body Butter ~~
The packaging is quite minimalist to be honest, and it doesn't make any promises or claims about what this body butter can do, it just simply states 'Pamper and Protect the Body with a rich blend of Honey and Vitamin E.' The instructions are just as plain, they suggest applying this liberally from top to toe. There is a screw top lid, and underneath that is a plastic covering which is easy enough to lift up, and it protects the cream underneath from going all over the lid, thus making a mess when you open it.
The first thing I noticed about the Elle MacPherson range is the scent of the products. It's strong, and quite unlike any scent I have smelled before. I laughed actually at another review which mentioned it smells like a freshly cleaned toilet, I'd never thought of it in that way before but I keep thinking of it! I have mixed feeling about the scent. It's very strong and extremely fruity and citrusy, so it does remind you of a lemon toilet duck, however at times I find the smell rather pleasant. Sometimes though, I find the scent too overpowering and off putting, it really depends on my mood. I'm not too sure what they had in mind with this scent, they could do with toning it down a little and making it smell less like a citrusy bathroom cleaner.
The body butter itself I have no problems with. It's actually really nice. It's not too thick or too runny, and I love massaging it into my skin after a bath or shower. It doesn't take too long to absorb and skin feels lovely and soft afterwards. I love applying it to my feet and elbows in those especially dryer areas, and it does a great job. I don't recommend applying this on a morning though, as the scent is so strong, and really does linger around on your skin, so you will smell it for the rest of the day. It will overshadow any nice perfume you apply, and this scent is rather quirky, I imaging it being one of those 'love it or hate it' type things, and so you probably don't want some people wrinkling their noses at you during the day!
~~ Would I recommend it...? ~~
This is an excellent body butter, completely let down by the very strong and unusual smell. I probably wouldn't ever buy it as it really is expensive, and sometimes the scent is just too much for me. If you have used other products in the range and love the smell, then I would say go for it, as it's a brilliant body butter, I just can't imagine this one appealing too greatly to everyone.
Summary: This would be excellent if only the scent were toned down or different.
