Advantages: Very natural, no harmful ingredients, smooth and streak free, easy to apply
Disadvantages: Can be expensive
I have to admit I've become addicted to Fake Bake. I used to be of the opinion that £18 was too much to pay for a bottle of fake tan, especially when things like Holiday Skin were so much cheaper. But that all changed two years ago!
One of my friends has gorgeous slightly tan skin the whole year round. She also uses fake tan, so she would come in to uni a little darker. I assumed she had been to a sun bed, but no, it was Fake Bake. She recommended I try it and I was hooked.
~*~*~What is Fake Bake?~*~*~
Fake Bake is a self tanning lotion which contains natural ingredients, none of which are harmful to the skin.
It contains a colour guide which allows for even and streak free distribution of the product and it is said to last up to 50% longer than other self tanning products.
~*~*~Using the product~*~*~
Putting on Fake Bake could not be easier. First I make sure that my skin has been nicely exfoliated. I apply a little Fake Bake Skin Smoothie and pat dry. Then it's just as simple as slapping on the fake tan! It takes about 20 minutes to do your whole body. You have to apply Fake Bake at night because it needs at least four hours to develop.
I always wear gloves when putting on Fake Bake. I usually start at the feet and work my way up, using equal amounts for my left and right. I apply a small amount to the glove and massage into the skin in circular motions. The colour guide shows up very well and it is very easy to see if you have missed a bit or if there is an area with a heavy concentration of the product. It's also very easy to see possible streaks and to smooth them over quickly.
It actually works into the skin very well; you do not feel greasy or heavily coated in product. When I have massaged the fake tan into the skin I usually throw on an old black satin dressing gown and wait a good half hour before actually putting on my pyjamas.
So, next morning, you just get up, look in the mirror and get a fright at how white your teeth look!!! Then it's into the shower to rinse of the colour guide and that's it.
~*~*~Stains? Smell?~*~*~
Surprisingly, no stains! Some of the colour guide does rub off on your bed clothes when you sleep, but they come out completely in the wash! Once you have rinsed off the colour guide there are no stains at all on clothes or towels or anything else.
As for the smell, it does have a light scent but it doesn't smell of that awful fake tan smell which seems to get stronger with a person's body heat bleugh! It smells quite pleasant and the smell completely disappears once you have showered off the colour guide.
~*~*~Results~*~*~
I'm quite pale naturally. I'm the kind of person who has to put up with old ladies saying "Oh my hen, your skin is like peaches and cream" or "You're awful peely wally, are you feeling alright?" I have blonde hair and blue eyes and I HATE that tangoed look that girls of my colouring tend to have when they use too much fake tan. That doesn't happen with fake bake. Now, my friend who used this first looks quite dark when she has it on. She has almost olive skin naturally and dark hair. Fake bake turns her the same colour that a real sun tan looks on her. I worried that it might make ME that dark.
I'm pleased to say that it does not. Apparently Fake Bake contains ingredients which work with melanin in the top layers of the skin, producing a tan natural to your own skin colour. Pretty clever eh?? And it really works. When I tan, I go a very warm golden brown colour, Fake Bake replicates this wonderfully.
One of the things I really love about Fake Bake is its lasting power. I apply this on a Friday and it lasts very strongly for a good five days. After a week it has certainly faded but is still quite uniform in colour. It is possible to build up the colour by applying on alternate days. I usually just apply it twice a week to keep a light, constant colour.
When it fades it stays very smooth, but if I've been using it for several weeks - more than 6 - it begins to look a little bit patchy. When that happens I tend to just let it fade and exfoliate every day until it's gone then I start again.
~*~*~Tips and Tricks~*~*~
Elbows, knees, feet and hands are all traditionally dodgy areas when it comes to fake tan. For elbows and knees I just put a thin film of body butter in these areas and Fake Bake lightly over the top, it all smoothes together and no one would ever know.
Hands and feet are trickier. It is useful to buy Fake Bake Skin Smoothie for all over but especially for hands and feet. You simply spray (quite a lot) on and then add a small amount of the Fake Bake and rub in thoroughly. The Smoothie helps to distribute the tan evenly and leaves it looking smooth and natural.
~*~*~Conclusion~*~*~
I couldn't live without my Fake Bake now. It gives my skin a lovely natural looking colour which stays even and consistent as long as I take twenty minutes twice a week to maintain it. Definitely worth it in my opinion. A 170ml bottle of Fake Bake costs around £18 depending on where you get it from. It usually lasts me about 2 months or more depending on how I use it.
I definitely think it is great value for the quality of the product and the wonderful results it gives!
Summary: My favorite tanning product, leaves a natural healthy colour which lasts.
