Advantages: See review
Disadvantages: Expensive for what it is.
Gillette Satin Care is a range of shaving gel for women designed to complement gillette's venus razor range. The avocado twist gel was brought out with the venus embrace 5 blade razor. I got mine free when I bought the razor.
PACKAGING
---------------
The gel comes in a pressurised pump top metal can with a lid. The can is is attractive, with a minimalistic "front" and usage/warning/ingredients details on the back in multiple languages. The lid has texture in the form of raised lines, obviously intended to have the dual purpose of attravtiveness and ease of grip in the shower or bath. The pump top is also slightly textured and easy to use with wet hands. However, the gel comes out quickly, with a singly push there will be a large amount of product in your hands, about the size of a marble. This is more than enough product for me to shave both legs, arms and underarms, so a gentle push will be enough.
PRODUCT
------------
The gel is a pale lime green in colour and has a sweet, slightly floral scent. I can honestly say it doesn't smell like avocado, but I have to admit that is not a bad thing. I can't imagine enjoying the lingering stodgy scent on my clean shaved underarms...
The gel foams into a dense white layer when rubbed onto the skin, you can either have a thick white layer or a thinner layer, both of which I find to be equally effective. I tend to leave the layer on for a couple of minutes before shaving, I've been told this softens hairs and makes the shave better as to prevent ingrowing hairs. I can't really say if that is in fact the case because I will happily do extraordinary things to avoid the discomfort of an ingrowing hair.
SHAVING
-----------
With the gel, my razor glides smoothly along my skin, but I don't think it does any more than soap to prevent razor cuts, in my opinion that has more to do with the blade. I have used this with venus embrace and with cheap tescos own razors, and I have found the better the razor the less cuts with either this gel or soap.
After shaving I find I need to use soap to remove all traces of the gel-there is often a layer that doesn't rinse off and it prevents effective moisturising afterwards. This might appeal to some people though. Also, the scent lingers if not soaped off.
STARS
--------
I'm giving this three stars because I think it an expensive waste at nearly £4 a can when it's effectiveness is not better than a soapy lather. It will appeal to some people though because it's nicely fragranced and give the mindset of a "proper" shave.
Another negative point is the pump plastic. There is a gap in between the plastic of the pump and the metal of the tin, and I find that after a few weeks this easily get build up stuck between that can't be removed. It is probably preventable by daily rinsing but who has the time or forethought to do that?
