(Em)brace yourself for what? (Gillette Venus Embrace)

Advantages: It's a razor and it looks quite nice.

Disadvantages: It, and it's blades, are ludicrously overpriced

Gillette is a very clever company in terms of marketing skills. I see their adverts and I want to buy what they are selling, often regardless of price. So when I saw an advert for the new 5 blade razor for women, Venus Embrace, I was determined to give it a go. In retrospect I should have really listened to the wiser part of my brain which screamed "It's a gimmick, it's a gimmick!", but unfortunately I am nothing if not stubborn and as such, my mind was resolved to trying the razor.

I was lucky that when I had a chance to buy the razor it was on offer in Superdrug at £3.42, otherwise my opinion of this razor may be even further soured. I gave it a go, expecting immaculate legs; however, although the results were smooth, they were no smoother than the Wilkinson Sword Quattro for women that I'd been using previously.

Still, like I said I'm stubborn, and I decided to keep using it. But when it came to replacing the blade I was in for a shock at the price of the blades. Quattro blades are around a fiver for 4, the Venus Embrace blades RRP at £14.68 for 6, that's £2.45 a blade.

At that price, and with such average results, I will be returning to either the Quattro or disposables. I will be reluctant to try any of Gillette's other products in the future, as I'm sure their claim of "our closest shave ever" has resulted in some pinocchioesque noses.
