Advantages: teenage girls love them
Disadvantages: cloying, sickly sweet smells
Impulse produce a range of body sprays marketed at teenagers and young women. You can recognise them in the shops by their slim pastel coloured aerosol cans with lots of pretty writing and pictures on them, a 75ml can generally costs around £1.89 but if you hunt around then you will find them on offer a lot of the time either on a BOGOF basis or reduced to a pound a can.
I remember liking Impulse when I was a teenager, the brand have obviously captured a range of scents which appeal to immature nasal passages as now my daughter loves these sprays. I detest them now that I am an old fuddy duddy and my impulse is to bin them.
I have two sprays in front of me, the first is called Goddess and claims to be a blend of oriental scents and citrus notes. When I first spray it onto my skin as well as feeling really cold I am overwhelmed with the alcohol that is within the spray which makes me want to cough. When the alcohol smell calms down a bit I have an extremely sweet smelling arm, there is a hint of vanilla in there as well as some spicy undertones but what strikes me the most is the cloying sweetness of the spray.
The second Impulse spray I have in front of me today is called Romantic Spark described as a blend of wild violet notes and wild wood scents. Again I start choking when I spray it onto my arm and am hit with the smell of the propellant. When this dies down I again have a very sweet scent which smells like parma violets and I imagine every wasp in a 10 mile radius will want to swarm to my arm to attempt to feast on what smells like an overload of sugar.
The Impulse sprays don't last too long on your skin, with the scent rapidly fading and being gone entirely within a few hours. The scent does linger when you spray it in a room however, I remember being overwhelmed by the Impulse smell one day when coming home around teatime after my daughter had sprayed it in her bedroom with the windows closed.
Teenage girls are not exactly known for their subtle and understated use of beauty products and my girl uses half a can at a time and when sprayed in this manner the resulting cloud of gas catches at the back of everyone in the households throat. Once she sprayed her Impulse in the back of the car and me and my nephew almost choked to death from the fumes. She is now banned from spraying her impulse in any room except her bedroom to limit lung damage to the rest of the household but I'm sure there is a hole in the ozone layer caused entirely by her Impulse usage. It's almost enough to make you develop some sympathy for PE teachers, just imagine being in a changing room with 30 girls all spraying Impulse at the same time, I wonder if the toxic cloud of Impulse fumes is what accounts for female PE teachers all developing sadistic personality traits? I think someone should study that hypothesis of mine in further detail.
I have produced a guide for any teenage girl reading on how to use Impulse:
1 It is a body spray, not a clothes spray or an air freshener. Spray onto your skin not your clothes or the air.
2 Less is more. Spray on a subtle film of body spray, try to make a can last for more than three uses. Try not to smell like you have been bathing in the stuff.
3 It won't do anything for stinky pits so make sure you use a deodorant as well.
It's obvious that Impulse has got the teenage body spray marked cornered so they must be doing something right. I have attempted to buy cheaper sprays for my daughter but after one spray she decides they are just not as good, I just hope that my lungs can withstand this assault on them until she grows up and moves onto more grown up smells. The only good thing I can see about Impulse from an adult point of view is that they produce gift sets at this time of year which make a cheap and cheerful gift that teenagers will adore.
