Advantages: Well priced, fast working & easy to apply
Disadvantages: Not a good moisturiser & hard to get off
As it is coming up to the summer months and I start to expose more of my body (ok I know its not a pretty sight but it has to be done!) I get very self conscious of my white skin, which lets face it doesn't look too spectacular when wearing white skirts and tops.
I don't mind the pasty look in the winter but once summer arrives I like to look my best.
I won't lie to you I am a big lover of sun beds and yes I do know the risks but they are like a packet of cigarettes you know that it could kill you but the addiction is very hard to curb.
I heard a lot about Johnson's holiday skin body lotion last year and was very dubious about trying it out. I have never been a lover of fake tans you can't deny some are really good but I am no good at applying them I get it everywhere and end up looking very streaky. However the more people spoke about this product I began to realise it wasn't actually a fake tan it was more of a moisturiser with added tanning ingredients. This really baffled me because I couldn't understand how it worked and whether it would make much of a difference or only a subtle colour.
What ever it did I chose to give it a miss. That was until this year when I noticed more and more products had came out that promised that they could do the very same thing as Johnson's holiday skin so I started to think maybe there was some good in this product. In the end I got sick of keep hearing about it and having my friend keep telling me I should use it instead of sun beds I decided to give it a go.
PACKAGING and PRCE
I popped into my local Boots store to pick up a bottle it was really easy to spot because it was at the end of the aisle and was on a special offer. I had heard most places were doing a buy 1 get one free offer but Boots were just selling them for half price. So I ended up picking a bottle up for £2.49, which seemed ok especially as they were selling them for £4.99 in Tesco.
The bottle stood out because they were on their own but if they had have been down the aisle I probably would have missed them as it is in a bright yellow oval shaped bottle with a squeezy id like the type you buy your shampoo in. I probably would have had difficulties finding it because all the tanning moisturisers looked very similar and only the brand names were different.
THE SMELL and TEXTURE
When you first have a sniff of the cream it smells quite fruity. Once it dries on your skin it does smell like you have actually been on a sun bed it is quite a strong smell that resembles tanning creams.
Once you squeeze the cream out of the bottle it just looks like a normal moisturiser white and quite thick not sloppy like some and not too thick that you can't spread it evenly.
APPLICATION
I applied by squirting a small amount into the palm of my hand and liberally rub over my whole body I get my boyfriend to do my back and I rub everywhere else right up to my chin line which I do not go passed. I wouldn't rub anything other than my usual moisturiser on to my face, as it just isn't worth the risk of getting very dry or spotty skin. I just match my foundation with the rest of my skin, which I find work s a lot more affectively.
After the first application I would that the insides of my wrists were a little patchy from the water splashing them when I had finished and also that my feet looked very odd, as I had only moisturised down to my ankles.
APPLICATION X2
2nd time lucky this time I rubbed everywhere even to the end of my toes I got a bit of dark patches over my ankles but that was all I was pleasantly surprised by the non streaky look and the good overall glow.
After the 5th application I began to notice that I was starting to look a little orange on my legs but that was probably because I concentrated on those the most.
A FEW DAYS LATER
Johnson's advise you to moisturise once a day everyday to build up a year long tan. They forget to mention that you really need to exfoliate at least once every 4 days to get rid of the old moisturised tan. I used Johnson's for about 2 and a half weeks and I shower every other day so I just assumed the moisturiser would come off bit by bit especially as I use an exfoliating shower scrub.
WRONG!
After about a week I noticed that I was getting large white patches that looked really odd and soon realised that the moisturiser had worn off on most places but not others * I literally had to scrub my skin till it was red raw to get my skin to match up again which I really didn't like.
They make out that the moisturiser is really light and easy to apply and looks instantly great I think the wording is all very misleading and the tan can look very silly within a matter of days.
MOISTURING
This product is meant to be primarily a body moisturiser and secondly to build a subtle tan. Well I can agree with the tanning point but it definitely doesn't provide all day moisturisation. Others may disagree but my skin is normal to dry and I have to moisturise everyday and that is why I thought this would be an ideal product. Unfortunately it wasn't. My legs ended up looking very dry and my chest began to peel due to the build up of cream.
TIP
When you get Johnson's it advises you to wash your hands after use, which is very important, but to be honest with all the scrubbing the tan doesn't come off no matter how quick you get to the sink. So I tried applying a thick layer of moisturiser on to the palms of your hands and fingers before applying your Johnson's holiday skin and viola no orange palms! It works a treat.
If you don't want the fronts of your hands to look odd and white apply Johnson's their first so it has time to soak in while your doing the rest of your body and then when you wash your hands it shouldn't come off too much
Do not apply when you are really hot or prone to sweat a lot i.e. getting ready for a night out as it dries very thickly in the creases of your skin and leaves a very dark line that looks very dirty.
OVERALL
This is a good product a quick tan fix but I don't think it's a very long term option. It is quite easy to apply and a lot better than fake tans but I wouldn't use it for moisturising purpose, as it just isn't good enough.
Tanning agent 3/5
Moisturiser 1/5
I would most probably buy this product again but would probably only use it on my legs as I just can't be bothered with the hassle of scrubbing it all off at the end.
OTHE PRODUCTS IN THE RANGE
This review was based on the Normal to Dark skin which I choose even though I am quite light skinned just so I could get a dark result fast and I just guessed that I would get a darker reaction and from what I have heard from friends I was right as the other option is a normal to light and I have been told that it gives a much lighter coverage.
I purchased a 250ml bottle, which is an average size, and the average price is £4.99 unless you can get an offer. If you really like Johnson's and it works for you then you would probably be best getting the 600ml bottle which comes in at £6.99 so it is real good value for the amount you get.
As well as the two moisturising options there is one for night time where you put it on just before you go to bed so it works while you are sleep instead of through the day.
If you like overall coverage you can also purchase the Johnson's holiday skin facial moisturiser at a cost of £5.99.
WHERE TO BUY SOME?
Last year I gather it was quite difficult to get your hands on this stuff because it was new and everyone thought it was amazing. This year it is a little easier and if you are quick you can probably get it for a bargain but as we get further into summer the more expensive you will probably find it. You can get Johnson's in Supermarkets, Boots, Superdrug, Savers, Wilkinson and all other good toiletry stores.
Summary: Worth a try will be different for everyone
