Advantages: SEE REVIEW!
Disadvantages: ONLY AVAILABLE IN ALDI STORES
It was whilst I was in my local Aldi store getting a few basic essentials (cat food, bananas, and coffee were on my list if I recall) that I decided to have a browse in the cosmetics and toiletries section of the store, as my other half had ran out of shower gel that morning, and I wanted to see if there were any suitable products available in this store.
Being a regular shopper at cheaper supermarkets such as Aldi, and being reasonably impressed for the most part, I wasn't all that surprised to see the great range of cosmetics and toiletries on display, most of which were, of course, absolute bargains! It could never be said that the store had the biggest range of toiletries I'd ever seen, in fact the only stuff I could see was their own brand cosmetics, but that didn't put me off and I decided to investigate further...
I noticed that there were several first aid items available, from paracetamol to sticking plaster, and the range of toiletries went from shower gels and body creams to sanitary towels and liquid soaps. I couldn't believe my luck when I noticed that most of the items cost under 99 pence.
Anyone who has read my recent reviews will know that I am on a mission to try alternative brands of cosmetics and toiletries, mostly shop-own brand or brands from cheaper supermarkets, as we have a large wedding budget to achieve and are saving like mad in order to have the "big day" of our dreams. Any cut-backs that we can make, however small, allow us to add a bit more to our wedding fund, and that can't be a bad thing!
With that in mind, I selected a few basic items for my other half, such as shower gel, body sprays and hair gel, and remembering that my own stock of spray deodorant was running a bit low, I opted to buy myself an aerosol spray anti-perspirant. What I bought was a tin of "Lacura Body Care 24 Hour Anti-perspirant Deodorant". A rather large tin it was too, on a par with other regular deodorant aerosol sprays, the can is 250ml.
The packaging gives a rather clinical and clean impression, this isn't a negative point from me - the can is mostly white and has powder blue coloured wording. The white can also has a powder blue opaque plastic lid. The packaging is quite pretty even though it's basic. Whilst my normal spray (usually purchased in Tesco) costs me around £2.20, the Lacura spray cost me 86 pence. Yes you DID read that right. Bargain? I was keen to find out....
The first time I used the spray was a day or two later, after I had taken a bath. I sprayed the deodorant under both arms like I normally do. The smell was pleasant, yet not over-powering. I found the scent to be quite light, and not at all over-powering, which I was pleased about. I do not like deodorants that over-take the scent of my body spray or even worse, my perfume! I prefer a deodorant to be either lightly scented or unperfumed. As I couldn't find an unperfumed anti-perspirant spray in Aldi, I had opted to buy this one, as I had a quick sniff in the cap of the can, and thought the scent wouldn't be too much for me to wear. I would say that the scent is a 'clean' smell, rather like a good quality soap or something similar. There is a bit of a musky element to the scent too, although I would stress that it is a fairly light scent, and I don't find it to be over-bearing.
I will point out at this juncture that I have had problems with sensitive skin under my arms in the past, and because of this I am always a bit weary when trying out new deodorants. In the past I have also had problems with cheaper deodorants which obviously contributes to my anxieties about trying a new product on this area, as in the past, some deodorants that are a bit on the cheaper end of the market have irritated the area. That said though, I cannot wear any "Sure" deodorant products, and I wouldn't have said that these fall into the 'cheaper' category, so I suppose that I should come to the conclusion that some products agree with me and some don't, irrespective of the price of the product!
This thought of a cheaper product irritating my sensitive skin did occur to me when I purchased the Lacura aerosol, but I figured it would be worth a trial at least, and hoped that it would be one of those cheaper spray deodorants that do NOT aggravate my sensitive skin.
So, after spraying myself with the deodorant following my bath, I had worn it all day with no after-effects to speak of. I also was happy to note that I had remained dry under my arms all day (from around 9 am until around 6 pm) which was really quite impressive, as again, I have had disappointing results from other anti-perspirant deodorants in the past. (Both expensive and cheap)!
I opted to have a quick 'freshen up' that evening, as I often do, and after washing my face and hands, I opted to have another quick spray under each arm, although I will point out that I probably didn't NEED to, it is just my usual habit. This second spray could still be detected slightly upon sniffing my armpits the following morning! That's fairly long-lasting in my book! (Don't worry, I carried out this experiment myself lol, I wouldn't get somebody else to sniff under there!) ;-)
Another quite valid thing I should report about this deodorant spray is that I haven't noticed that it leaves HUGE amounts of white residue/powder on my clothing or skin. I find that (again, in particular with cheaper sprays) some sprays are quite bad for leaving white marks on your clothing, which is obviously quite a big consideration for us ladies. Is there anything worse if you are going on a night out, or wearing a really expensive top or dress, to have it looking like you've brushed against somebody with flour on their hands? Arrgh! So, I'm very aware of the white spray residue, and have been looking for it when I've used this spray, but so far it remains unseen!
I am very happy to report that I have been using the spray on a daily basis since that first trial, and am more than happy with the results. I have had no irritation, no noticeable wet 'patches' under my arms, no white residue, no itching, and most importantly for me, it does what it's supposed to, i.e. keep me feeling quite fresh and dry.
Full marks from me - I would definitely, definitely recommend it, and I have to admit that I am converted 100%. I'd rather have the extra quid in my wedding budget every month! :-D
Summary: DOES EVERYTHING IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO, BUT COSTS HALF THE PRICE :-D
