Advantages: Fresh breath, noticeable difference after first use
Disadvantages: Mouth stings slightly after first few uses
I always use mouth wash as I have a very strict dental routine mostly because I hate having treatment at the dentist ! Since becoming pregnant I have suffered horrendous morning (all day) sickness. Without going into details I became concerned at the amount of times I was being sick and the impact it was having on my teeth. Therefore I changed from my regular Colgate mouthwash (which I felt was not removing plaque build up on my teeth) for Listerine Freshburst mouthwash which is renowned for being quite a tough mouthwash.
***Packaging***
The Listerine bottle is pretty simple and plain. The bottle is clear plastic so you can see the bright green mouthwash inside. The bottle has a black plastic lid which is childproof. It is childproof for safety reasons however even I find it quite difficult to remove the lid at times and requires quite a lot of strength when twisting the lid. The white label on the front of the bottle has an image of some teeth and gums.
***Price***
I bought a bottle of Listerine Freshburst mouthwash for £2.00 in Asda for a 250ml bottle. This was on special from the usual selling price of £3.25. In comparisons to other mouthwash products all of the Listerine products are more expensive by around 50p however they are a reputable brand and so far I have noticed a considerable positive difference in the condition of my teeth.
***The Claims***
The claims on the bottle are that "Listerine reduces plaque by 56% more than brushing alone". It also claims to freshen breath and kill bacteria.
***The Product***
The Freshburst mouthwash is bright green in colour. Directions for use are to use 20ml twice a day and swill around mouth for 30 seconds.
The only negative is that the product felt like it was burning my mouth as I swilled it around, in particular my tongue, which tingled for around 5 minutes after using the mouthwash. Because of the burning sensation I struggled to keep the mouthwash in my mouth for 30 seconds on the first few uses. As I have grown used to the sensation I can now keep swilling for 30 seconds. The taste is fresh mint. The mint is apparent but taste is not so noticeable at first; the burning sensation is!
Immediately after use my breath felt extremely fresh and my gums and tongue were tingling from the mouthwash, giving a very clean bacteria free feeling. When I ran my tongue over my teeth my teeth felt clean and smooth and felt less gritty. After two or three uses my teeth felt noticeably cleaner and more bright and glossy when I smiled. This product was definitely worth paying extra for.
***Overall***
My breath is fresh after use and stays fresh for much longer than my regular Colgate mouthwash. My teeth felt noticeabley cleaner after the first use and after a few uses I noticed there was less of a build up on my teeth. If you can get over the stinging sensation of the mouthwash in your mouth, you will certainly get over the sting of the cost, which is outweighed by the benefits of the product. Top marks!
Summary: Strong mint mouthwash for fresh breath and plaque free teeth

- 31/07/09 Can't stand mouthwash that hurts your gob - some of them are just pumped full of all kinds of stuff to fool you into thinking they're helping when they're probably burning your gums terribly. |
