Advantages: A very strong mouthwash
Disadvantages: None...it does the job!
There's mouthwashes...and then there's Listerine. A product such as Dentyl ph does the job, and you can clearly see the 'results' when you spit it back into the sink, but Listerine is a slightly cheaper but just as convincing mouthwash.
It's main selling point is arguably it's incredibly strong flavour, which many will find overpowering and even uncomfortable; although milder tasting types are available apparently. (Thanks Wikipedia!)
The Listerine brand has a consistent slogan of "Kills germs that cause bad breath", and being an antiseptic mouthwash it will do just that. The Freshburst version which I'm reviewing today has a particularly strong antiseptic feel to it. By that I mean the strong flavour is very overpowering - almost alcoholic it taste, along with the obvious essence of mint. But the strong flavour is the antiseptic working its magic, and this is how Listerine differs from other mouthwashes on the market.
It's a emerald green colour, and it comes in a clear plastic bottle which vary in size. From the regular 500ml bottle, to smaller, convenient bottles that you may wish to carry in travel bags for example.
There are obviously other types of Listerine products out there, all depending on taste preference really as they will do the same job of course...There's Coolmint (Blue) and Original (Yellow-ish) which are arguably their two more popular products compared to the green Freshmint one.
Now, looking on the American Listerine site, it gives a lot of information on each Listerine product, but for the Freshmint option it lists these as the 'active ingredients'...
water, alcohol (21.6%), sorbitol solution, flavoring, poloxamer 407, benzoic acid, sodium saccharin, sodium benzoate, D&C yellow no. 10, FD&C green no. 3
Yes, clearly there's a lot of alcohol in it, which is why the taste is just so strong. There's obviously instructions for use and things to advise against, all of which you'd expect to find - Do not use with children under 12 years of age. Keep out of reach of children. If more than used for rinsing is accidentally swallowed, seek medical help...either that or you'll be drunk very quickly!!
Many dentists recommend using a mouthwash and I'm sure will recommend Listerine. In recent years there has been the odd health scare regarding it and the links it may have with oral cancer - which have never been proven I should clearly state. But many hygienists will also recommend rinsing your mouth with it for 30 seconds...go on, try it. I dare you. Because it's that strong it will leave your mouth burning...but one heck of a lot cleaner!!
Summary: Just what you need for extra clean teeth!

- 09/09/09 My dentist told me not to use it as at a dental convenction that she attended, they were all informed that it strips the enamel off of your teeth. Good review though :-) |
