Advantages: It is a rough scrub

Disadvantages: Expensive and unstable

Whilst in Edinburgh staying with Dave (he is still working up there) recently I went into Lush in Princes Street. This is always a big treat for me as we don't have a branch at home in Llandudno. Our nearest branch is Chester, which is quite a distance away so whenever I am near to a branch I pop in and treat myself to some goodies and why not?

This time I wanted to get some hair care items and when I had made my choices I took them to the counter where the assistant told me that I could go and choose one of the free gifts which were scattered around the store as I had spent over £20.

I decided to try the Sugar Scrub as I do occasionally exfoliate to brighten my skin when it is looking dull.

The Product and the Cost

The product is Lush Sugar Scrub and, had it not been free, it would have cost £2.50 for a solid half sphere of the product about the size of half a tennis ball

Packaging

For those of you who don't like hearing about the packaging of a product you will be thrilled to know that this one is sold loose, as are a lot of Lush products.

You just pop it into one of their little yellow paper bags in the store and the assistant puts a label on it to remind you what you have bought and hopefully tell you anything you need to know about it - or not in this case, but more about that later.

The Claims

The information in the shop and on the label told me that this was made with fair trade sugar and was to be used for getting rid of cellulite. As you probably know from comments and recent reviews of mine I don't accept the theory of cellulite! I just think that your skin ages and that it is best to accept it whilst looking after it as best as you can. I do think that cellulite is an invention of the beauty industry to get gullible people to part with lots of money, but that's just my opinion.

I chose this product because my skin often feels and looks a bit dull so I do like to exfoliate to make me feel better and give my skin a bit of a lift.

The website information, which I read after I had used the product (more about that later), said that it would 'stimulate activity where there was once sluggishness and tackle cellulite with fennel and ginger'.

The Look and Smell

As I said earlier this product is about the size of half a tennis ball and it is a very pretty grassy green in colour. The texture is rough as you would expect and the grains of sugar in it make for an almost sparkly effect.

The smell of this one isn't very strong, which is unusual for Lush products I know, but I can just about smell the lavender that has been added to allegedly give a 'balancing effect'. I have to say that I can't really smell the main ingredients which are fennel and ginger.

The Use

This is where my problems began.

I jumped in the shower with my new scrub and began to exfoliate the skin on my legs and arms BUT the Sugar Scrub immediately began to disintegrate! I put it on the shelf at the end of the shower and continued my ablutions.

I did manage to exfoliate my arms and legs and I have to say that the skin felt SO soft afterwards it was lovely. I didn't really notice any fragrance as I was using the product but that was okay as I used my normal shower gel to wash after I had exfoliated.

The Sugar Scrub was quite sharp almost to the point of being painful so don't rub it too hard on your skin and be careful on any delicate skin. I just used mine on my thighs, calves and arms. Although it did feel sharp it really did make my skin feel alive and it wasn't bad enough to produce any ill effects on my skin.

Once I had finished my shower I picked up the Scrub to put it onto a wad of tissue to dry out but I could feel it still disintegrating between my fingers, so I put it down quickly and left it to dry.

When I later looked on the website to see if there were any tips on how to use this I found that it gave the warning ' Get yourself wet in the shower or bath but don't let the bar get under the running water or it's lost before it's has a chance to prove itself'.

I have now written to Lush to suggest that they let people know this when they actually buy the product. If I buy an exfoliator I don't expect to have to find out how to use it by looking at a website! What about people without internet access?

The Result

The skin where I had used the Sugar Scrub felt very smooth and certainly looked brighter and less dull than it did before I started, although there is no associated lingering fragrance with this one!

Conclusion

Well I was impressed with the smooth results but no more than I would have been with any other exfoliating product. I do also think that, even using the product as directed on the website, it won't last for more than half a dozen showers if that.

It is too messy to carry about so this is one that I will only use at home and I won't bother buying it again.

I think that the information in the shop and on the label should make it clear that this product should not be put under running water or it will disintegrate and I was disappointed with Lush for not doing just that.

The rating from me is three stars purely because this product is so unstable.

Summary: Not my favourite Lush product

Shame it was disappointing.

Try their Rub Rub Rub sea salt shower scrub. It comes in a bottle and I think it's really good.

I love this but I was told how to use it in the shop, I even had a demo. the sales assistant said that they are made for one use to give your body a really thorough exfoliation but I have used mine three or four times and I still have half left.
