Advantages: No nasties, smells great, works!

Disadvantages: A bit fiddly (stick with it!)

After seeing a horrifying tv programme last year and convincing myself that all ordinary anti-perspirant and deodorant would give me cancer, I embarked on a quest to find an effective replacement. The obvious place to start was Lush, where I had a great conversation about non-carcinogenic, non-synthetic, non-aluminium containing toiletries with the (as usual) very enthusiastic and helpful salesperson and left happily with one of Lush's solid deodorants - I think it was something like Teo. This was a powdery, chalky oval, and smelt great - I won't dwell on it because this review is not for it, but suffice to say that it rubbed my armpits and made them sore. (I have since learnt that this may be due to my application, I am impatient.)

Following this I sulkily used an 'ordinary' roll on deodorant for a while, before girding myself for another try. I had one more false start, with Aromacreme - which smells lovely but again irritated my skin. It is not suitable for sensitive skin. Finally, with some advice in store, I purchased Aromoco. This time, like Goldilocks, I found a deodorant that was "just right".

I have always hated the overpowering smell of the usual floral or sporty options of deodorants and usually chose fragrance free. Aromaco suits me because it is unusual smelling (with a distinct whiff of patchouli, but not enough to mark you out as a hippy) and quite subtle. It blends with my other Lush natural smelling products.

It also works! Hallelujah! You buy a lump, currently at 3.95 per 100g, in the same way as soap is sold at Lush. The bar is similar in consistency to soap, or perhaps more like a massage bar. When rubbed gently (think gliding) over your skin the bar coats your arm pit (or anywhere else smelly - feet for example). It helps if the skin is warm, as the bar slightly melts onto it. I have been using mine for a couple of weeks without making much impression on my bar so I anticipate that it will last for ages. Part of Lush's policy is to use as little packaging as possible, so this product comes wrapped only in a layer of paper. I find that a (reusable!) zip lock sandwich bag is ideal for storage.

Summary: Better for you, and the planet! Try it!

Jo I think everyone is different so you need to try - the good news is that Lush will give you a small sample piece to try for a few days before you commit to buying a bigger slab. just ask one of the staff who are usually falling over themselves to help!
