Advantages: Lovely strong citrus scent, great texture, very moisturising

Disadvantages: Doesn't last long, so not very economical

I used Lush's Lemslip butter cream recently and thought I would write about it while it is still fairly fresh in my memory! I bought the product for two reasons - firstly I had used Lush's Skinny Dip Butter Cream a few years ago, and to my recollection liked it, and secondly I think I lost all common sense and had several major Lush sprees, buying virtually every product they own!

Lemslip is from Lush's butter cream range. A butter cream is basically soap with a difference. Each one contains 20% soap, and 80% butters, oils, infusions and 'other fabulous things' according to Lush. There are six different ones to choose from and I went for Lemslip as I love citrus fragrances and I also liked its sunny yellow colour.

If you buy this product in the shop it will come in a small cardboard container, which I believe is biodegradable. I bought mine from the website and it arrived in a plastic sandwich box type thing, which I thought was a little strange, but I have washed it out and am now using it to keep pens in!

The butter cream is a pale yellow in colour, certainly a little paler than the one pictured, and just looks like a big slab of soap. Unlike the picture it doesn't have little bits on the top (I think they're crystallised lemon?), but you will notice the big slabs of butter cream they keep in the shops have these bits on.

On opening the plastic container for the first time, I was hit by an incredibly strong lemon smell. This stuff is really quite potent, and the lemon fragrance is a lot stronger than I had expected it to be. At first I wasn't sure if I liked it or not - I normally love lemon scented products, but to be honest I thought it reminded me of a Cif cream in a way! I have to say though, the scent really did grow on me, and it's a lot more subtle once it's on the skin.

The Lemslip contains lots of lovely ingredients, including Lime Oil, Sweet Wild Orange Oil, Fresh Lemon Juice and Gardenia Extract all of which contribute to that amazing zingy fragrance and Lush say are antimicrobial which means they can help clear up spots. Like Lush's regular soaps, it is made with their palm-free base of rapeseed, sunflower and coconut oil, and also contains cocoa butter, which is known for it's skin-softening properties, and I would guess is what gives it, it's buttery texture. The other thing it contains is sea salt (Sodium Chloride) which has lots of minerals in it and is often used in body products.

Talking of texture, the butter creams have a very different texture to any other soap products I've used before. The butter cream has a very soft, squishy texture, and is quite slippery to the touch, which I guess is partly where it gets the name Lemslip. It's a smooth and creamy soap - no bits in it, despite the fact there's sea salt in there.

You can choose to chill the product in the fridge or freeze it before use. The first time I used it, I put it in the fridge for a few hours beforehand, but I didn't think it made much difference apart from that it was cold! I didn't try freezing it, but I think that's something I'll do next time I buy one.

To use the product you simply take a piece off and rub it over your skin. I only ever used this on my body, I'm not sure that they're designed for use on the face. Because of the strange texture, you have to literally pull a piece of the butter cream off, and then apply it to wet skin. I was surprised that it made a slight lather, and although it felt slippery on my skin, it was also very creamy, and it felt moisturising. The strong lemony smell is really invigorating too, and is great for using in the mornings as it really wakes me up.

After using this, my skin feels soft and moisturised, and it has a lovely lemony smell, which is surprisingly subtle, given the strong fragrance of the product. Lush say this is perfect for oily skin prone to spots. Now although I actually have dry skin, I have been getting spots in weird places such as my legs and arms recently. I don't really think this necessarily did anything to help clear them up, but I haven't had any more, and this did not do anything to make my skin drier either - in fact the opposite as it felt more moisturised.

100g of the buttercream will cost £2.35 and can be bought in store or at www.lush.co.uk. I must be honest, I only got about 2 weeks worth of use out of this stuff, as you need to use a fair bit per use, so it's not the most economical of products, however I would still buy it again as a treat.

All in all, I was quite impressed with the product. I can imagine it would not be to everyone's taste given that the scent is very powerful, but personally I liked it and would be more than happy to use it again.
